I thought copying a CD to a computer hard drive for your personal use is not illegal. Are you saying just doing this is violating the law?

I have a hard time swallowing that.

The RIAA is pursing an insane strategy. Their business model is outdated- plain and simple. Rather than figure out how to go forward, they are spending the money they do have to sue their customers and potential customers.

I am baffled by this.

Let me say two other things:
1. I do not think the Washington Post article says this is the current state of the law, simply an argument in a lawsuit- which it may become the state of the law.

2. The record companies developed the CD standard knowing it was an open standard for computer use. The copying to hard drives was forseeable and therefore I think while piracy is clearly wrong, someone "format shifting" a CD to their iPod should not be illegal. I think the record companys could or should foresee that this would occur.

btw- I still buy CDs.

Jerry
