Interesting comments.
To be clear, I am looking at a used 808i not a new one for $15,995 (US Dollars). The net increase in spent dollars after selling my G08 would be in the $5,000 range.
I probably listen though my RSA Apache headphone amplifier equally to what I listen through the DSP 5200s so I was also considering the best upgrade for the value. The other consideration I had for the 808i is I could use it to connect my analog set up through it, which today is connected through another system that doubles as a basic home theater.

For that price, I think you are doing an excellent find!
But do audition it.

My concern in your post is that you have not got a guarantee to $$$$ upgrade the 808i to 808.2. I would try get hold of M USA/HQ on this one, because it doesn't sound like a statement in the spirit of M. Well, I emailed Meridian UK recently and they completely denied the 808.2 even existed or that there were plans for it!

Well they showed it on CEDIA'07. I think it's important who you talk to at Meridian. It seems their information channels are not always up to date on events

Well, I emailed Meridian UK recently and they completely denied the 808.2 even existed or that there were plans for it! I suspect the person who replied didn't know or wasn't sure of the public status of the information and was simply playing safe. The information flow does leave a lot to be desired though. I would prefer not to get my information 3rd hand or having to pick apart the latest brochures.

This is a question I would like to know as well... I placed order since early October and so far, no news at all... Somehow I heard the 808.2 will have slot-in mechanism instead of tray loading, but my dealer told me it should still be tray loading Guess only when it's out, the truth will be revealed.. I do hope they will change the loading mechanism because the current tray loading is simply.. not elegant..
Current System: Toshiba SD-9200 --> DSP-8000 Secondary System: Pioneer DV969 --> DSP-5200

It would be interesting if the drive does change to a slot loader whether true DVD-A will be supported rather than the DVD-V part. There is some belief that the slot loader was the inhibiting factor for DVD-A not being supported on the G95 [and F80 although the cited reason for DVD-A (like HDMI) not being on the F80 was product positioning within the whole Meridian lineup so a marketing rather than technical limitation].
Meridian owner since 1992 Prime & PSU, Focal Elear headphones, Roon (ROCK 8Gi5 NUC), Explorer 1 & 2, F80. 200/203, various Sonos (via Roon).

I'd be surprised if the slot loader was the problem. DVD-A decoding happens in the MPEG chip. Interestingly, the G91 replacement, the G92, is not described as a DVD Audio player...

They are clearly dropping DVD-A. Dolby TrueHD will probably be the "replacement" further on.

Are you sure that the DVD-A encryption/watermark is not handled at the drive level? I could be wrong, but my understanding is that the drive is only about getting bits off of the disc; the decoder takes over from there. I believe that Meridian's choice of MPEG chip (C-Cube Ziva) was down to that manufacturer's commitment to DVD-A. The 596 and early 800 (I think) used the Ziva 3. Their DVD-A players use the Ziva 5 which was the first MPEG decoder with DVD-A support.
