No. "Better" movies are always welcome, but DVD is an artefact riddled mess which, no matter how good the actual film, forces it's deficiencies upon you and detracts from the viewing experience. For me, one of the biggest pluses of the new HD formats is their lack of gross artefacting. You are no longer made aware that you are watching a compressed format and are free to enjoy the film on its own merits.

Of course there is variation in the presentation between discs but it's on a more general level, eg this transfer could be sharper, cleaner etc, rather than playing the "how many artefacts can I see per second" game, oh whoops, I should actually be watching a film here...

Enjoy, Chris smile

I certainly don't disagree.
Give us better movies,
give us the better movies already made in a better format,
don't hype HD - just give it to us -
especially for those best classics - like 'It's a Wonderful Life'....

I watched Elizabeth last night on HD DVD. Superb and only marred by SWMBO commenting on numerous occasions "I can see their contact lenses"! The CGI didn't hold up well either, but that's a minor flaw in an excellent film. This was the first HD DVD that made me realize how bad the prints are at cinemas, because I don't recall noticing the "bad" CGI when I saw this at the flicks...

Just got the Star Trek The Original Series on HD DVD. They completely remastered the audio and video and redid the exterior/ efx shots with CGI. The quality is excellent- but the CGI shots are a little weird. Before the efx were clearly dated, but that is in keeping with the material. Now many of the CGI shots look like the little snippets you often find on video games. It just feels a little odd, but it does look great and some shots are spectacular. Overall, I like it, but its not a home run, its well done though.

best regards,
Jerry

I stopped going to the Movies after seeing the 3rd Harry Potter film in Portsmouth I think.

The sound was slurry like a bad cassette deck, especialy noticable with Violins.

I know what it will sound like at home, so now I await the DVD release of any film I want.
Better still, I just wait. I may get it for Birthday or Christmas given I made the right noises. If not well...........
Its surprising how quickly they can be almost given away at car boot sales, or deep discounted at the supermarket.

You make your money when you buy, not when you sell.

Cheers, Chris smile

Dumb question, but are all older movies 24 fps? e.g. Wonderful Life

Since the advent of sound film most commercial pictures shot for theatrical release have been shot at 24fps, yes. I'm certain A Wonderful Life was.
Silents were shot at varying speeds, from 18 to higher than today's standard 24fps.

yes - virtually without exception. The 24fps standard was set from the beginning matching projector and camera technology.

Even the first film based TV is all 24fps (i.e. Jerry's newly acquired Star Trek original series - Hogan's Heroes - many others followed.)

Some of the earliest Disney animation also used 18 (and 20)....

Just got my HD EP35 up and running. Have to say even on my lowly 720p projector, I'm impressed with the PQ. I like what the HD colour gamut brings to the show.

Soundwise, DtrueHD sounds OK over the analogue inputs but I've been more impresseed by some of the well mastered DTS tracks I've heard. Still I've only tried Batman Begins and Harry Potter OotP so far in this respect.

One HD newbie - quite impressed so far
