Interesting reading - my thanks also to John and M.
Was hoping for some greater insight into 861v4 to v5 to v6, but I suppose will have to wait and see. Implication is that v6 will be major, but will it included HDMI?

thanks JK and M- for taking this time; Much appreciated; I agree with M- regarding the format wars - bad for almost everybody (except the replacement technology); Also agree that HDMI is proving to be a headache for many; although it was selected by the industry and will require some dealing with. USB is finally making it on the M- list we see!
However, I'm in disagreement with M- on the transport revolution taking place in general (media servers); To VK's point... M- is clearly not leading in this area of implementation (but seems like they could be if they chose).
On balance though, I'm pleased with my Meridian products and look forward to more....
thanks again - John and M-

Many Thanks JK and M, Am looking forward to my M directors chair becoming available.... & who says they don't give away new product release details... I also appreciate entirely M's needs to be discrete in what their plans are for the future to avoid giving away any competitive advantage. A nice follow up question might have been to ask who they see as their major competitors as they seem quite unique to me... Maybe Naim or high end Arcam here in the UK but they don't seem to take things as far, especially as far as digital processing and video is concerned. Maybe Chord...? I imagine they have a lot more competition in US however. Cheers Again Simon

Thanks too JK and M. On a more positive note, we should point out that DVD is where 99.99% of the content is and will be for some considerable time. Meridian makes the best players for both DVD and CD and, combined with our video processing, the results are better than superb. Our earnest recommendation is: ‘Don`t wait! Buy a Meridian DVD player. I really can`t understand that kind of recommendation. Meridian makes cost-no-object products for high-end cinemas. And now there are two new formats on the marked that is a huge improvement over the old DVD-format. Actually, you could use 1000-1200 on two HD-players (HD-DVD/BD), and most of the new (and old) movies from Hollywood is now comming in either one of the two formats (or both). This will give you better sound and picture than ANY DVD-player on the marked, at ANY price. And 99.99% percent maby correct for the mass marked. But the mass marked don`t buy expensive home cinema products. On any home-cinema forum you will find that most of the people now use some kind of player for the new formats. Simply because it IS that much better! But Meridian still recommends too buy a super-expensive MPEG-2 DVD-player for a high-end home cinema. Come`on.... HD Audio codecs currently only support HD-DVD and BD. We have pointed out several times that, everything else being equal, HD Audio should be decoded in the player and that passing the undecoded stream leads to awkward system architectures, including for the video. Maby I don`t understand correct, but I really can`t see the advantages in decoding the sound in the player. First the D/A convertion in the player, and then the A/D convertion in the processor?? Then what is the point with HDMI? Better yet, whats the point with a expensive processor when the player is doing all the work? As a 861 owner, I was really hoping for some news on a HDMI 1.3 card, and support for all the new High Definiton sound formats. Why not give this with a V5 option for the customers, and if even more options/demands comes allong the next 1-2 years, it could be released in a V6 upgrade? I don`t see the point with a 12000 processor if it`s going too have analog inputs for HD sound. Sorry if I am misunderstanding something.

Thanks to all for the work to make this happen.
Particularly after looking forward to this for awhile, wish I felt I knew more now than I did yesterday.

Haknys, if Meridian were a big Company like Sony etc, I see your point. But they are not and have to stay in business. For the new formats they need to wait as it could all go the way of DVD-A. Meridian do not benefit from the economies of scale larger companies enjoy. They probably cannot afford to subsidise players to create markets as major players can. Whatever they do do, it will be well worth the wait, but wait we must. They really are in a NO win situation here and quality seems to be their eventual goal. Alot of what I watch is not in any HD format and very possibly never will be. For me, I cant afford it yet anyway, and as such have no choice in the matter. Just a few thoughts, Cheers, Chris P.S. I like the Idea of another open day, well worth putting yourself out a bit to attend if you missed the last one. (Top Goodie bag) .
No 18 in the Hall of fame I have simple tastes; I am content to settle for the best: GIK monster bass panels, rear wall. QNAP TVS 471i3. Roon into DSP5200SE via 210/ 218 zone... Explorer 2. Bluesound Pulse 2, Mini & Flex. 596v1, 518, Foxsat HD, Sony BDP, Pioneer 5090, 2 Chromecast's for LRB videos. MS200 to F80 for a Roon zone

Questions you didn`t ask:
What about your relationship to the Hitchhikers Forum?
We applaud the efforts made by the majority in the Forum to be helpful, informative and polite, not to mention in running the systems. Where possible we try to stay out of routine topics because we feel that the commentaries carry more credibility that way. I'd be happy for M to contribute on issues that are relatively objective, e.g. how to use MRC. But I'd prefer they stayed out of more subjective debates, e.g. "are power cords snake oil?". I occasionally lurk on the Naim forum where there is more of presence from HQ, and this does seem to lead to there being a body of accepted views which get parroted out by contributors there. Mark S

haknys:
Agree with your frustration, however, two points:
1. The sucess of HD-on-disc is hardly assured. M is a small company and cannot afford to develop a solution that is either the wrong format or supports something that is destined for DVD-A/SCAD oblivion. Clearly they cannot be saying ...don't buy our DVD player! 2. Decoding HD audio codecs in the player gets to PCM. PCM then gets sent to the processor for the D/A conversion - much like is currently done by 800 for DVD. So, unless I misunderstand also, you are still passing a digital signal to the processor - not an analog one.

Sorry, but I know nothing more on the G96 and the G92 than what I posted. The info came from the Meridian dealer for the BeNeLux in the Netherlands.

So, unless I misunderstand also, you are still passing a digital signal to the processor - not an analog one. Yes, and this is exactly what can be accomplished with HDMI 1.1 (or any newer version). Gefen makes a box, reported on another thread here, that separates video and audio from an HDMI source but, unfortunately, is only capable of 2channel SPDIF audio output. Gimme a multichannel version of a box like that with 3 S/PDIFs to connect to the IE42 and I'd be very happy. Kal
