On Windows (any flavor)

Alt+Print-Screen grabs current window to clipboard.
Ctrl+Print-Screen grabs entire screen to clipboard.

Paste in MSPaint and save as jpeg or gif.

The only time I've needed fancy screen grabbers is if I'm trying to catch Popup menus, as they disappear as soon as you hit Alt+Print-Screen.
