I used to have (not any more though) the "sliding door" Sony 7700 and I also helped a few people set up other Sony DVD Players of a similar vintage

I remember a Setup Menu option which asked you how you wanted the DVD Player to output 96/24 material. I think this was in the Setup Menu under Audio Options

I never tested to see if setting this option ACTUALLY outputted 96/24 material from a suitable DVD-V, but since 96/24 2-Channel Audio was part of the DVD-V spec, I would have thought it would. Worth trying on yours and see what your G68 reports as the source resolution
