1 Wall == Boundary. Usually you have Free, Boundary and Corner.
It can also be read as, 0 Walls, 1 Walls, 2 Walls.
I never investigated what "sub" did.
Boundary Options on center might be slightly different than mains. Been a while since I looked.

the guys told me that center boundary is there so you can setup the center independently- but lets face it- we now know we can setup each speaker independently anyway so its not really needed but I do run it as center boundary. So in my case the corner speakers are setup to corner and the others are setup as boundary/ wall. I never investigated sub either.

Jerry, beautiful cinema. I cannot believe I had to coerce you into using HD in that room! re: boundary settings - I don't see what they can offer which cannot be achieved with MRC. Both can be used to change the output curve to remove room reinforcement in the bass regions. My speakers are right against the boundaries, but baffled on all sides by bass traps and foam to cut reflections and reinforcements, and then MRC'd to add that final adjustment which wasn't possible with physical treatment. Let me ask you guys this- whats the great evil of using the boundary settings? One day when I have a lot of time (HAHA) I will try moving the fronts as close as possible and some toe in on the rears. Mark- when you sent me the HDDVD machine I was in the process of making the upgrades and after seeing HDDVD and knowing how it would work in my theater I went out and got a BR player- I knew you had ruined me for ever- ITS ALL YOUR FAULT!!!!!!!! best regards, Jerry

The Boudary Settings are basically a glorified bass knob. It turns down ALL the bass blindly (even frequencies that may be behaving fine). MRC selectively attenuates only problem frequencies that are measured to exist !!

George, obviously I didnt know that and now knowing that and sitting here in my office I am feeling this urge to get outta here and go redo the calibration. I have assumed (please tell me if I am wrong) that when you tell a speaker with side firing woofers like the 8000 its location, say left front, that it knows its right side is facing a wall and it will do some attenuation to the drivers on that side. I further figured that a setting like corner simply builds upon this realization that you are shooting into a corner so its stronger than boundary. I must find some time now to go and check out the settings. I might as well explore sub1 & 2 also while Im at it. Maybe that is more attuned to the lower frequencies?

Very nice looking theatre and congrats on not winning a CEDIA award as none of those "ornate" theater sound musically correct. We're actually redoing a Theo K theater so it will have good audio/video. The theater aesthetics are amazing, but it stops there.
So congrats again and enjoy!

No, I don't believe it's that smart. The way the drivers are set up in 6000's and 8000's they are pairs from side to side (1 amp per pair). So electrically they are not wired to do more on the one side vs the other. I also think there is some leverage in the design to put equal power to both sides. It also doesn't make sense where the same exact options are available on the front firing DSP's. It was needed (required) before MRC came along.
The newer manuals don't show what the boundary "curves" look like but the older manuals did.
You may be perfectly fine. But I would certainly try it both ways. You can probably get a good idea by looking at the uncorrected decay curves with boundaries on and off and get a good idea which would be best.
You start to get into the grey area of heart stopping good bass and heart stopping bad bass. But usually if it feels "bad" it's bad bass (i.e. slow decaying bass).

Thanks Jay. Well this afternoon I took a few minutes and I did the physical changes: toe in to the rears, and I also moved them a few inches wider and moved the fronts in about 6" per side. No changes whatsoever to calibration. The early results are what I would call promising. I had the Genesis Duke DVD-video with its 96/24 DTS lossy track cued up from the other day and I used this simply as a video source to tell me when the speakers were getting too far in. I decided to have a listen also. I can't believe Im saying this, maybe its simply psychological from a change of any sort, but the sound seems liberated and also more cohesive. I'm too wiped out now to do more, wouldn't want to do anything that requires too much thinking and then over look anything. I will compare the curves but I will also have a listen with music and movies and see what I think. I have a weird feeling that it will work better with the speakers set to free. Ah sweet freedom... best regards, Jerry

This sort of work can be exhausting and takes a lot of time. It's important to crosscheck yourself so your head doesn't play games with you.

Jerry Just one further suggestion would be to focus your "trials" using the highest definition sources possible. My thoughts (even though others may disagree) would be that if you experiment (and hopefully get it right) with "HD" sources, then it will still sound at its best with regular CD and DVD So, for what it's worth, I would experiment with the DVD-A that you know best (the Yes DVD-A, perhaps ) and a dynamic recent "blockbuster" movie with a 1.5Mbps DTS Soundtrack, digitally into your 861 (given no IA45 present) Lastly, I would optimise the speaker positioning for my seating position, even if that meant denigrating the sound at the rear seating row and other seating positions. (My guess is that most of the time, you are watching Movies or listening to Music on your own. Again not meant as a personal affront, merely a reflection of the way most people listen to their systems. It's a lonely job, but somebody has to do it ) Cheers Ronnie
