The main reason is room correction, but you would also get upsampling if your CD player doesn't already provide that. Having a processor also allows a centre channel for Trifield etc. at a later date.

The DSP's upsample themselves. If you only want 2-ch and you can manage your speaker placement etc then don't get a processor. However, if you want either MRC and/or other sources to play then get one.

Seeing as you have already tried and liked a G91, you should definitely get some DVD-A discs to try. There are more than 200 DVD-A Discs EASILY available on the internet and probably another 60 96/24 2-Channel Music Discs

Please dont think of DVD-A as Multi Channel. They ALL carry a High Resolution 2-Channel 24bit 96khz mix which you will really enjoy on your D8k's.

I would be shocked if your Meridian Dealer didnt have a few DVD-A's that you could borrow to try out. When it costs nothing to try.....

If you want to look at what's available then try the following

Amazon.com
DVDEmpire.com
ClassicRecords.com
Play247.com

As you probably know the G91 that you have tried is BOTH a CD Player AND a Processor. This will give you MOST of the what the other Meridian processor's will give you, but not Room Correction. However that doesnt seem to appeal to you anyway.

As you state that you are interested in Music only, then the G91 would be a good purchase as Meridian have no short term plans for a HD DVD or BluPay player. These discs and players are all about Movies anyway and may not be of interest to you?

If you REALLY have no longer term interest in Movies or Multi Channel music, then a G98 MIGHT offer Slightly better CD replay. Any difference may be difficult to hear due to the Processing capabilities of your D8k's, but it would be slightly cheaper than the G91

One last thing I will mention again is to try to borrow a Meridian centre speaker from your dealer and try it with the G91. The Centre speaker will simply plug into the back of the G91 and you can try Trifield with some of your favourite CD's. My suggestion would be a vertical DSP5200

I understand that this may not appeal to you but if you can borrow the speaker from your dealer then surely it worth trying with an open mind to see if it appeals to you. Especially when it wouldn't cost you anything except time.....

Good luck and enjoy your D8k's

At risk of being pedantic, they are not all 96/24. Indeed, one of Richard Bates' (UK Sales Manager) favourite demo tracks is La donna mobile from Andrea Bocelli's Verdi DVD-A. As I discovered to my amusement when I bought it for myself, it's only a 48/20 recording. It sounded magnificent on 5200s though and should sound even better on 8ks.

But I already have a MSR+ with the D8Ks and the D8K is a preamp with 2 inputs( D1 and D2)I use the D1 for CD/DVD and D2 for my DAB-radio.

If they are the only sources you need then you're all set. It's a very elegant solution to use D1 and D2 I think. If you had an analogue source then you'd need to think again.

VK, I forget which ones, but, I have a few DVD-A that don't carry a 2.0 track (something on Naxos and Natalie Merchant IIRC)

First if you're gonna spend the bucks on DSP8000's that automatically puts you in a certain budget class.

So if you gonna bother with spending these kinda bucks on speakers why not get your money's worth out of them for a realitively small incremental cost.

If you do want to strictly stay 2 channel then a G91 isn't a bad choice. Except you do loose out on Room Correction. In general the more ooooph a speaker or sub has the more likely MRC can help you. But be warned that Meridian Room Correction is very fussy to tune.

You can cleanup your low frequencies with placement and room treatment etc. but that takes quite a bit of experience and can lead to a fair bit of cash too.

A lot of us love what Meridian can do with 2 channel sources on a multi-channel setup. You need a processor for that as well. The G91 is a processor too, but a fairly dumb one.

Even with 2 channels you'd probably get more out of a G68 and a cheapo transport than a G91.

Once you have a G68 with 5 speakers (even modest ones) you'll understand why.

- Fiddler (IMHO)

If you think listening to music is fun, try learning an instrument.

I purchased the G91A together with a DSP5200HC and is now enjoying the TRI-Field life. Interesting after 25 years of 2-ch stereo.
I am using a pair of Philips DSS—930 for back-sur. (an interesting DSP-speaker very much like a DSP5000). The back-side being that I am not able to run Meridian COM. with them.
I have been offer a pair of DSP6000(24/96) at a very good price. I am not able to test them before purchase. Are they a complete over kill?

congrats....make sure you search the historical posts here for tips on how to get the best from Trifield. When it works it's really sweet.

6k for rears...overkill ?? One heck of a great system IMHO.

FWIW, I am very happy with my minimalist system of a 500 transport driving a pair of DSP8000's.

I am in the process of adding a Sonos to the second input of the 8k's as soon as I get around to ripping some stuff to FLAC...

Someday I may play around with room correction, but I'm not necessarily convinced that MRC is the only viable solution...

Mike, I was running my SB3 direct into my 8k's for quite a while.
Can't get any simpler than that (until M put a client device inside a DSP that is ;))
MRC isn't the only solution, but, it is quite effective.
