I forget the details (obviously from my prior error). But you can set the player to decode or not decode. If you set it to decode (MHR off) it will limit to sending 24/48 to all 6 channels (DD/DTS is 24/48 anyway so no loss in quality, that is no downsampling). If you set it to not decode it will just pass encoded DD/DTS out.
If I recall correctly it has both and Aux Coax out and the Main Front 2 channels (out the 6) available. I'm not sure if you can have undecoded go out the Aux and Decoded go out the Main. There are settings for each (Aux and MultiChannel Output) but I forget what options are available.
It's really about as flexible and you can get.

It's been a while, but when I had 598 & 568.2MM in my showroom, the MM (MHR) was so unreliable I had to hook up the additional coax out to an available digital in on the 568 to get any sound at all from various DVDs. John I've never had an ounce of problems with MHR or the MM connection through 598. Don't recall mention of it on this site either but perhaps I missed it. It can be a little confusing at times setting thing up correctly. There was just one case I think like DTS CD's or something that it was easier to just use Aux out. If you had any DSP speakers set as non 24/96 on your processor that can cause problems.

As a dealer who was very familiar with the 500 series I can tell you emphatically that the 598 via .MM yielded silence from 1 out of every 15-20 DVDs. I actually had to hook up the additional coax digital out just to avoid embarrassing demos to clients... Not trying to be negative, just tellin' it like it is (or was, rather)

Not trying to be negative, just tellin' it like it is (or was, rather) I must admit there were some issues with earlier firmware but for the last few years I have had no problems at all with smartlink (mm on the 568 with a 598dp). M did eventually fix the bugs that caused no sound. The problems were with the 598 firmware.
