Help! Does anyone know of a way to "switch-off" the Macrovision on the 596?

i see no smileys in your post....
in order to defeat macrovision, you need to get an outboard processor like the SIMA Color Corrector. my understanding is that it's part of the bitstream on the DVD - it's not added by the player hardware/software.

Even though I can not turn off the Macrovision on my Meridian 800 or make it play all regions, I did buy a Pioneer Elite DVD player that has macrovision disabled and plays all regions disbled via the Pioneer hardware/software.

well then, i guess i have to retract my smart-*** comment about smileys!
how can companies produce macrovision-defeating, region-free decoders without getting stomped on?

One of the disc authoring options is whether or not to enable Macrovision.
In the case of [at least the earlier] Pioneer players, the spec sheet for the DVD chipset was available from their OEM components website, and disabling Macrovision was an easy change on the circuit board.
I don't know what the situation is with the 596 or the 800 - I suppose I should open them up and take a look.

Maybe it is time for someone from Meridian to leak the secret codes for permanently disabling the Macrovision? They aready leaked the secret of defeating the regional coding, but then again how many Meridian owners would want to waste their time making crap quality VHS copies of their DVD's?

I doubt that will ever happen. Macrovision is hear to stay.

Trust me. You can turn Macrovision off in the software just as easily as recoding a player.

Not that it really matters, but Meridian did not leak the region defeating codes, they were as interested in how quickly the sequence was worked out!
Region coding and macrovision are different things.
Region coding is just a scam to enable the studios to try and control release dates.
Macrovision is about protecting copyright holders, enabling a pirate to pirate makes you a pirate so don't expect to see this being made available by Meridian some time soon.

More accurately, it lets the studios maintain an illusion of piracy control while making life difficult for customers with legitimate needs for clean video. An example is people with simple VCR's/TVs who don't have a second input on the TV and have to pipe the DVD output through the VCR, even though they aren't recording.
Meanwhile, you can download free Windows programs which will decrypt a DVD and give you video in whatever file format you want. And the studios are failing miserably at controlling the _real_ infringers. On the streets of NYC you can buy copies of current (and as-yet-unreleased) movies. Sure, some of these are from people in theaters with camcorders, but you could also buy SVCD's of Lord of the Rings on 34th St. *before* it opened. *That* was an Academy copy ("For Your Consideration"). The studios should get their own houses in order before making life difficult for consumers, particularly as the steps they take have no effect on organized pirates.

tkennedy, I fully agree! BTW: Currently, on a German internet marketplace for pre-owned audio/video equipment, someone offers an almost new Proceed PMDT - Region Code and Macrovision FREE with FULL warrenty of the official German Proceed Distributor. Now, how did that go ![[Linked Image from softronix.com]](http://www.softronix.com/ubb/wink.gif)

I just installed the latest 2.16 and 2.17 for the PMDT. 2.16 MPEG fixes the chroma bug, but 2.17 OS does NOT stop the PMDT from crashing. I tried three DVDs and it crashed on all three. Forgive me for wanting to watch Toy Story and Dinosaur! ![[Linked Image from softronix.com]](http://www.softronix.com/ubb/smile.gif)
