Obviously I have logged a call with M, but was wondering whether anyone has experienced similar and can advise time to fix, etc.

My 598 was dead as a do-do this morning - will not power up. Have checked both the mains lead and the integral fuse.

PSU? When mine went, Mother turned it around very quickly.

Yep, sounds like the power supply. I've had the misfortune of going through two power supplies with my 598 in a year's time.

This happened to me short time ago - the PSU had gone.
A quick sniff of the player will confirm this, with a smell of burnt insulation.

If you get high sniffing the player, you'll also know someone's been cutting 'blow' on the glass top...

Yes, mine too.
Has been at the service shop now for a month. The supplier has claimed that the power supplys had been shipped from China but not arrived yet. (according to the service shop, actually know the owner)

So why do so many 598s have failed PSUs? Is it a design fault, or are we perhaps not allowing enough ventiallation to cool the unit? Or do we need to install fans like the 596 of old?

The design of the 596/598 PSU was changed a while back. I seem to recall a better spec PSU that ran cooler was introduced. That's why later 59x units were fan-less. I expect that the later PSU's would be more reliable.

Don't know if it's a heat issue. But I did have the 598 right next to the 568.2 with both chassis touching. In my new setup, I have the 598 on a shelf by itself sitting below the 568.2 with at least 6" of space above it to the shelf with the 568.2 and the front/sides/back entirely open. We'll see if heat is the case. I think I'm approaching about one year with the current power supply.

I do have a fan in my 561 which never comes on. So when I get the 598 back I am thinking about putting that in the 598. Thoughts?
