I'm of a fan of the 'old school' URC MX-500. I like hard buttons, and it was easy to customize for my M gear and setup. Higher-end models by URC are computer programmable, have more macros, and color touchscreens, etc.

I tried a Harmony 880, and couldn't get it to work via it's computer setup w/M gear, though it's in the database. The button layout is inferior to the URCs imo, as well.

I used to have a Pronto and moved across to the Harmony 880 about 18 months ago. I like the 'activity' concept of the Harmony and I found the programming very straightforward for my Meridian gear. The basic programming engine is the same for all the Harmony models, so its a case of deciding which style of remote suits you best - I liked the screen on the 880 for other users in the house. The only thing I regret not having is the four coloured teletext buttons, because I now have a Topfield PVR and they would be handy.

There is a new Harmony with a touch screen, but never tried it.

had the colour pronto - took ages keeping it up to date with all my gear...and the missus hated it....and the screen wasnt exactly accurate with my stubby fingers....bought a harmony 880 yesterday, had it configured in a couple of hours and loving it. Nice ot have proper buttons again.

Plus the activities make it easier to use for the missus...

I vote for the MX800/850. Easy to programme and use.

I swear by OneForAll (URV) used in conjunction with JP1. You can get a $15 remote to do anything a pronto (et al) can do. Programming is only for those who enjoy such challenges though. In my view real buttons are a must so you can 'feel' your way around.

Does the Harmony 880 have a self learning feature? Is the on-ine datbase include Meridian gear?

Brad, if you mean can it learn other remotes, the answer is an emphatic yes.

It has most Meridian gear in the database, and whenever someone learns some new M gear it is uploaded into the Harmony central database. The only caveat I would make is that the Harmony is unit based, so it will have remotes for say a 506 without understanding it is the same remote as a 565 - so it thinks there are two sets of commands. It just means you have to keep an eye on the programming.

My system works flawlessly with all my kit.

I had Pronto, enjoyed but finally got tired of work to keep it up and looking down with 2 hands to operate. moved to harmony 880.

The concept of harmony is great and works flawless on my Meridian components. However it's fussy with some equipment especially mixing commands from mixed devices. So you have to put in delays here and there to fix things. This can make the remote sluggish.

Overall I recommended the Harmony.

Just look out if you have Logitech Harmony remotes - don't upgrade the SW anymore! Reportedly one of the main features, that one button press can send a command to more than one unit (turn on both the DVD player & the TV), has been permanently removed.

The function was buggy for a few users, and instead of fixing it Logitech decided to remove it and say that it was never intended to be used like that. Even though the manual describes the function.

Chris1971:

Although I am HUGE advocate of RTI I decided not to chime in -- at least not until now -- as I have stated in many diffierent threads that they are the best and most expandable system that I have ever used in my many years and did not want to sound like a broken record on this...

The Harmony remotes -- in my opinion and based on my experience -- all have one majot flaw...they are very difficuly and tiresome to customize...
