bebop:

I would add another option -- which is the one I would pursue.

I assume that you -- at least to this point -- loyal to M. I would hence sork things out that you will keep the current projector and assist them in working things out with the undersatnding that (i) you will not pay a penny more for any gear and (ii) you will receive, at no cost to you, the MF-1 replacement should said projector come out within the next 6 months as compensation for not being able to enjoy your current projector.

Good luck and let us know what happens.

I agree with Doody. I would also take the advice of staying calm. You can allow your voice to get stern, but don't go nuts.

Also, IMHO, for a 12' wide screen, if your throw distance is 20+ feet, youre gonna wanta projector that is very BRIGHT.

I want to warn you for the Crystalio 2.
I do own one, and the things that work, work great.
But the 2.35 thing is not reliable yet either.

Read an example of that on the PMS forum:
http://www.pixelmagicforum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1959

PMS do know how good video has to look, and they work on the problems. But the possibilities are so advanced, not all is working in each situation (yet)

Jaco,
is 2.35 not reliable or is it that their scaler has some useability problems doing other ARs like 2.2/ 2.65 etc. I read this as: if youre happy to have some detail chopped off a 2.2 movie, or play a 2.65 movie back as somewhat letterboxed if your screen is 2.35 then youre AOK.

So far Ive had no problems with my CII. Very pleased with it- but we are just beginning to get it up to speed with the runco projector. Weve tested the setup and so far the results with the 55 projector are very impressive. light output reminds me of a really big plasma- this is on a 30' throw distance to a 137"x57" 2.40 screen.

I cant get over the feeling of immersion when watching on that screen. 2.35/ CIH is the way to go my friends.

BeBob- its too bad that you have to be patient, but if Meridian are working with you then see what happens. In my experience they are a classy company and you won't be disappointed.

best regards,
Jerry

Jerry,
My PMS 3800 is OK again. The sound from the internal player had audio drop-outs. Sended back to PMS and got it back and now it plays good.
I do not have a 2,35:1 screen, but 1,78:1

Further i am not that interested in a super wide screen. Most stuff i download is not true OAR, so "shaped to fit my display" smile

OK- a little (very little update)- I spoke to Des (nice chap) he was aware of my situation and also could not understand why no one has gotten back to me- He said they are all at a show and someone would get to me on monday( not sure about what)- It truly seems that they are at a loss as to what to do- I do not think that they have the anamorphic solution even close to being ready and came out with this PJ to quickly- My dealer also tried calling M USA again and he also is at a loss because usually problems are handled very quickly and he has had no luck- So here I still sit with no PJ and no answer!!

Thanks to all for your input - I TRULY appreciate it - Maybe one day I will actually watch a movie!!- Gary

You should really return the PJ and get your money back. And no, Meridian does not have a solution for constant height setups and they probably won't have one this year at all.

Their projectors are JVC, the difference is the tweaking they do which was developed by William Phelps. There is really nothing special about it, no other performance tweaks or anything. You could get the exact same performance from a JVC unit if you have it optimized by William. Price is about $1k.

Processors, and that is where your problem is. The Meridian processors are Faroudja. While Faroudja had the best processors a couple of years ago, I wouldn't touch it with a 10ft pole today... the processors are very poor performers and lack about every feature you could think of.

You could fix your problem by adding a different processor, but since you're paying a premium for the whole system anyway, I wouldn't do that. You'd be better off returning the projector, buy a HD10k, have it optimized by William and buy a seperate processor.

Meridian use fully programmable processors. With all due respect, you probably do not know what features Meridian have implemented so would not know what features they lack. They certainly do not use stock Faroudja chips and algorithms and are constantly able to tweak their solution to give what they feel best.

Thats what I though Ian,
Bob said Meridian develope their own algorithmns and as such are well ahead of stock chips used by mass market producers.
Roll on Monday Gary, lets hope you get some results.

Cheers, Chris smile

I would think that the "fully programmable/unreleased algorithm" statement correspond to the 6080 processor and not necessarily the 1080 processor?

We are all on dodgy ground here, because - as stated - we simply don't know the mix of Meridian and Faroudja technology in the M-F VPs. We also don't whether or not Faroudja are back on the bleeding edge with their algorithm development after suffering a dip post-DCDi.

The DVP-6080 does not appear to be in production yet (it's not even in the Digital Theatre in Huntingdon) and I have read comments (from several people who were at CES) about the new motion-compensated frame interpolation looking "odd".

Also, without blind tests, no-one is in a position to say how good or bad the Meridian processors (or projectors) are. We are only able to compare the feature sets and, IMO, the DVP-1080 compares very poorly vs. the competition. The DVP-6080 is also ludicrously expensive. It's a statement sure, but is it the best?

Don't get me wrong: I am pro-Meridian, but I will not take their marketing claims verbatim until the products are submitted to the utmost independent scrutiny. I've seen people on this forum and elsewhere raving about Meridian's projector and VP, but in many cases it's their first experience of high-end projection video!

It requires constructive criticism to force anyone to improve. Not doing so on this forum would be to do a dis-service to Meridian. As an analogue, just look at what happened to George Lucas - "Great script George [lots of sucking noises]. No improvements needed". Cue Episodes I, II and III...
