or me it means that (i) I'm unlikely to have to junk my G68 in order to deal with 7.1 input channels and (ii) if political HDCP issues can be overcome, then an external box that will accept HDMI and output 8-channel MHR to an existing processor is one of several possible solutions.
That's my hope too.

And as an addendum to living in the present, I'd love to lose 'lipsync' as an option to scroll thru when listening to music. HS Output should be put in the wizard, and not as another scroll thru for all inputs.

But an HDMI card for 861 ? That should absolutely be pre-announced; it's an entirely predictable development, gives nothing away to the competition, and makes existing owners and potential customers feel happier about their spending plans.
Unless, of course, M are going to implement HDMI input into 861/G68 in a uniquely clever way!

Thank you to the Meridian Team and to JK for doing this.

Guys, each manufacturer will interact with their customers differently. My experience is that Meridian IS a special company and of course they are lucky to have us as customers, but we are lucky to be customers of a special company because if they were not here we would be customers elsewhere probably and would not enjoy the terrific products they put out. Given that they compete with such a wide array of companies in such a competitive space I not only understand, but I would encourage their not discussing future plans. I too would like to know the answers to the big questions (HDMI/BR/HDDVD etc) but I suspect that by giving us anything on these they would be giving other elements away. What makes Meridian special is their intellectual talent- its not silicon. So they have to protect that. All I can say is I have dealt with companies that do not stand with you and those that do and IMHO Meridian is squarely in the camp of companies that do stand with their customers. I am sure there is a side of them that would love to tell us of their plans, but they know better- and I think in the end their products will be better for that and as we are customers, we are all better served by that. [ok, fanboy mode off now smile ]

Answer on the layer change question-over on the Kaleidescape forum we have been discussing this. Turns out we Kaleidescape owners see layer changes! How can that be when the movies are played right off a hard drive? I was surprised to learn the answer. Something about DVDs, I did not know. Turns out that when they author a dual layer DVD, the layer change is authored in- its not just physically moving the laser, this makes sense as I suppose the player has to know to do this. So even with a hard drive playback there is a slight pause/ stutter in playback. I always felt the 800 had a really fast layer change and the Kaleidescape is even faster- but its still there. So it seems to me the answer is, for DVDs at least, while someone might be able to build something that buffers the data and anticipates the change, the practical reality is the layer change is here to stay.

best regards,
Jerry

No thanks necessary. I really do enjoy talking with Bob smile At CEDIA maybe we'll take a photo wink I've resisted doing so in the past for the simple reason that I'm not particularly photogenic laugh

I would think a user supplied number between say 30-60 would fit most situations as a fair "start up number" and maybe an option to "start up at last volume"...

Jerry

Jerry:

Start up at last volume on DSP speakers I think is what triggered this particular discussion.

Completely OT.

JerryL, where in the US are you? I'm coming over in April for two weeks for a conference. I'd love to see Kaleidescape operational (no dealers in Australia and no one will answer my emails). I'm going to ASUG (American SAP User Group forum) in Atlanta, Georgia.

Shoot me an email: chris_at_neary_dot_com_dot_au

Hi Chris,
I'm in the NYC area. What I would recommend is for you to contact Kaleidescape and ask for a dealer in the Atlanta area. I am sure they have one. Btw- do you know Meridian USA is near Atlanta?

John,
You know, this is what happens when you over think something, I had forgotten that yes, the DSPs do start up where I left them. My brain must have been fried by listening to that new Beatles Love disc laugh

best regards,
Jerry
