John,

Thanks for doing this again. I would be interested in Bob's thoughts on the following:

Bob mentioned last year that he was surprised by a couple of problems/ideas raised in your questions. Whilst I recognize that this forum represents a minority of Meridian customers, it probably has a disproportionate number of those that are pushing to explore the limits of product capabilities. There are also more than a few folks with a technological understanding that is likely way beyond the norm of Meridian users. It could be a commercial mistake for Meridian to respond to ideas from this forum with the assumption that this reflects the broader interests of the market. However, it is precisely user groups like this that can ask about capabilities that the typical user doesn't know they need/want (yet).

If I were in Bob's seat, I think that I'd ask one of the tech support, development or market research folks to visit the forum periodically (once every 1-2 weeks?) I would ask of the forum that there be two sticky threads:

1. Technical Questions for Meridian
2. Product Suggestions and Requests for Meridian

The former being a spot to place questions that we don't seem to be able to resolve within the community. I think this could be a good organized source of ideas for improvement.

3. Would Meridian allow the forum to have access to electronic versions of their manuals to post on the forum. I would like to see an arrangement similar to Wikipedia whereby forum members could post enhancements, with peer or moderated edits. I assume we'd all be happy with Meridian then using whichever pieces it saw fit in their official versions.
4. Any plans that Meridian might have for enhancement of MRC. In particular, I would like to see: (a) automation of speaker distances and size settings, (b) automatic testing of a range of different crossover settings to see which results in the 'best' response prior to MRC and (c) if it included room dimensions, suggested initial speaker placement (within constraints) and movement. EVOP from statistical design of experiments (Box, Hunter & Hunter) could be incorporated for iteration provided a suitable objective function could be defined. It would seem that this might be realistic for subwoofer placement, at least.

Cheers, Ian

Confirmation of whether the G46 will be released, along with DSP versions of the Meridian in-wall speakers. When can we expect to see these available?

Will Meridian be releasing a JVC RS-1 projector and what video processor will it come with. Will a 2.35 stretch option be included out of the box and will Meridian be going down the 2.35 path, i.e. ISCOIII lens included with auto slider.

Will Meridian consider a trade-in option, similar to TAW, for audio and video equipment.

Rather than opting for native OS versions of the config software, what about Meridian offering a version that can load via a web page. Making it OS independant.

Thanks again John.

John:

Usual slate of questions including:

1. 800..what are the upgrade plans...what are the plans for HDMI...what are the plans for Bluray and/or HD-DVD...what is the future of MHR re: high res...will it be possible to output 480i so that my video processor can do the deinterlacing (which I would greatly prefer)...what are plans for those of us who have invested inthis piece?

2. 861..what are the upgrade plans...what are the plans for HDMI...what is the future of MHR re: high res...what is the thinking re: decoding new high res codes...what is the thinking re: integration with 3rd party vp that add an audio delay (i.e. presumably just set audio delay in the Meridian to 0), etc.

3. G46...will this ever become a reality and if so when?

4. MF-2...will the current offering be replaced by a JVC RS-1 based unit, what enhancements over the JVC unit will M be offering (i.e. Phelps calibrations, lens, etc.), timing, etc.

5. MRC will this be further improved over the current interation (i.e. the need to manually iverride the deacy time is less than optimal).

6. OSD/User Interface...will this be improved via an OSD capability, a web based capability, etc. I find the current solution to be "less than current" -- at the very least clean it up (i.e. 861 has no bightness variable with MConfig and thus, the need to reset this exists after every upload).

That is it for now...will add/edit as I think of more.

Greatly aprreciate your efforts on our behalf.

Please please please ask if they can Fix/Add feature to DSP systems to set the volume to a SAFE level when coming out of standby on and 861 and all processors.

My understanding is that it work on Analog setups but not DSP. They have it so when the processor reboots it goes to a defined level. It should go to this level when coming out of standby.

This is really importantant.

I've been blasted so many times (as my wife was wrapping xmas presents on the living room floor not too far from the speakers) when I turned on the radio she got blasted from watch a movie that was at 80 the night before. This is sinful to have this kind technology and not have this fairly basic feature. Which existed on 568.2 with analog setup.

It should work for ALL setups (processors and DSP/Analog).

If they can't fix it, I'll probably have to add and X10 switch to reboot the 861 everytime I use it.

I'll second the request to sort out the DSP33 not-coming-out-of-standby fix. Leaving them on permanently is a poor solution and is power hungry in an increasingly power-conscious world...

Good point. I don't remember if I've ever been blasted but I can see how this could happen.

I bet your wife was really happy with you on that one. smile I would like to "second" this request. This has got to be a simple fix.

...then I'll throw in the 2 Subwoofer question they didn't understand last time (and never gave an answer after the explanation):

Since I have one analogue (DD-12) and one DSP (D1500) subwoofer I can't use them as Stereo Subs. The option is instead one Mono center Sub + one Mono Rear Sub. However, since I want to use two subs for more even low frequency distribution in a "difficult room" I would want the two subs to play the same music information.

As it is now (depending on other speakers Small/Large settings of course) the Center Sub gets LFE+bass for the three front channels while the Rear Sub gets LFE+bass for the two rears. I want both subs to get all bass, it's then much easier (= it's possible) to calibrate using Velodyne's calibration + MRC.

tommy:

How can Velodyne's Digital Drive EQ System work on the D1500, I'm afraid you lost me there. It can only EQ itself (ie the DD-12); not the D1500.

The rest of the question is fine; you want to use an analogue and a digital sub as stereo subwoofers.

OK. After my Cedia "faux pas", I'm going to be as unambiguous as possible.

4) Does the architecture of the G6x/861 allow for eight-channel digital inputs? i.e. Are the current multi-channel inputs tied in firmware or hardware? Presumably increased processing power could be added to the 861 if required, but even if eight-channel inputs could be accepted by the G6x is there enough processing power in the G6x to handle eight channels?
Do I spot three questions for the price of one?

Although I would also like to see this fixed. I don't think it will save power. All standby does normally on speakers is mute the outputs. I'll double check how much my DSP5500's draw on standby vs on and idle, but I believe it's the same.
