Another year ... another discussion on the mythical HDMI input/output board for 861: as we begin to get sources that outut 1080p24 video, any audio processor input/output board must be able to pass this (and all) video stream .... please!

Hopefully, one of these years we'll be able to stop asking about it though smile

I'll believe it when I see it!

Can you name 1 other device that still uses a null modem RS-232 for setup communications. These M guys take their sweet time....

I could name a few STB's and displays that need it for firmware upgrades. Makes sense as RS-232 does not require much/any code to get them to work on the device unlike bus type interfaces like USB that require drivers.

I curious why Meridian equipment uses about the same amount of Watts in standby as when the units are on.

My G68 and G91 use each 30W in standby (32W when on). This is a 500Watt waste of energy every year !

Thanks for posting the standby currents. So that's equivalent to a 60W light bulb for keeping a G68 and G98 in standby. Plus the speakers...

Not sure where you get the 500W waste every year!

By my reckoning, 30W x 24hours x 365days = 262.8 kW per year energy consumption.

According to EDF, thats 0.138 tonnes of CO2 emissions per year.

Here I pay approx 10p per kWh so that's about 26 for leaving one G series unit in standby - ignoring overnight tariff. I am sure that one could easily get that to over 100 so a turning these things off at the mains would save a lot of money, unnecessary energy waste and reduce CO2 emissions.

OMG - I have just turned eco warrior.

BTW. Maplins power meter is on special at the moment at 14.99 until 23/01/07 - reduced from 26.99.

The rest of the question is fine; you want to use an analogue and a digital sub as stereo subwoofers.
Cheers,
No, it can't. Can't say I wrote that either...
And your second assumption is wrong as well. wink

First, DD-EQ/MRC:

What I would like to do to get more evenly distributed bass in my "problem room" is this:
* I first make a rough calibration of everything but the DD-12, to give DD-EQ a base to work on. Just automatic MRC.
* Then I turn on the DD-12 as well and calibrate with DD-EQ. Less dips and tops in the frequencies.
* After that a "real" MRC run which should now only fine-adjust, shortening reverberation times somewhat.

The problem is that the two subs play different musical info (front/rear) and can't really help solve the acoustical problems as I have intended.

So, I want them both to play the same bass information - all bass information.

Currently, with two identical subs you can have them left/right stereo. With two non-identical it's (kind of) front/rear stereo... I want "real mono" (but that's what I wrote last year and probably that made Meridian understand nothing at all... laugh )

I believe using two non-identical subs as a stereo pair would be very difficult to implement, and at least hard to get as good as needed to have any benefit from it.
I want to have the crossover low, so the bass info will be non-directional anyway (apart from the occasional LFE track with frequencies 80-120Hz). And I think this mode "Send all bas to both subs" would be rather easy to implement, it ought to be.

I'm sure someone would want to be able to have a non-matching pair as stereo subs, but that's not me...

I can't believe that my G68 and G98 use 30W each in standby. They would get hotter than the "barely warm to the touch" which they present in normal circumstances.

Did these consumptions get measured or are they Meridian figures? Is there any spec?

You can't use MRC this way though. You either run MRC first or you run MRC last. You can't run MRC multiple times and apply multiple passes. The 2nd run wipes out the results of the first run.

You either use Digital Drive or you use MRC first then you use the other.

In my experience, using DD-EQ first followed by MRC gives better results than running MRC followed by DD-EQ.

Well, there is the fact that you have two physically different subwoofers which is a less than ideal circumstance.

They have different performance characteristics and assigning them identical content probably goes against sound acoustic practices if you'll pardon the pun.

"Real mono" would feed 1/N of all speakers to each sub + 1/N LFE where N is the number of supported subs. That's what you want for disparate subs.

The crossover is a seperate issue and as long as you don't mind the same crossover being used for all speakers and this is already covered.

Ian,

Your calculation is off because I have 2 units (2x30). I rounded it off because there are moments when I actually use the G91/G68 ;-) And yes that should be 500kWh per year, not 500W.

Malcomlw,
I used an energy meter (not sure which brand), positioned between the outlet and the component, for measuring.

Just a simple couple of requests from me.

On a G91 please can we stop it automatically switching to DVD input when the disc tray is closed ? It's not clever if your listening to another source and just want to retrieve or que up the next disc. You then need to listen to silence whilst the G91 finishes it's disc read before you can switch back to the other source.

What chance the implementation os a CS ("Current Status") RS232 command on all products ?

Cheers

Paul

I think you may need to clarify this Paul.
