Viruskiller
No I didn't retype and am reluctant to reload the config. file and firmware. The situation is that when I tried to re-run the update it gave me options for all other products apart from the G68! It was the only unchecked box and it clearly stated next to it that it was up to date. Meridian themselves state that you shouldn't try to update the current version of firmware if it is already installed. Took me ages to disconnect and take to my PC so am looking for a more definitive answer before doing that again. What was strange was that when I reconnected everything I tested speaker calibration to ensure correct speaker connections etc. and that worked fine but when I tried to play something all was silent! A bit of fiddling, cold booting and the sound returned....one of the mysteries of enjoying Meridian eh?

Rodders Mine says 1.35... I actually had to flash twice as, the first time around, something went wrong during the flashing of DSPE. Second time was issue free. one of the mysteries of enjoying Meridian eh? Oh yes!

~M~ LOL! ultima_gtr answered this in this post . Originally posted by ultima_gtr: BTW - Latency will be the delay from a sample arriving at SPDIF, probably to the point just after the DAC (or the speaker cone).

Anyone noticed that although G91 2.25 is supposedly available you don't seem to get it? According to the update program its there and it fetches and installs what it claims is 2.25 but the contents of the G91 firmware directory only contain 2.20
Looks to me like its the wrong f/w on the web-site

Gents, just to elaborate on the latency,
In a digital sense, latency is the delay through a block. It's related to clock rate and the number of registers (or FIFO stages) a signal goes through from input to output. I'm sure Viruskiller is familiar with this from clock rates and pipelining.
In simple terms, it now takes 7.5ms for the sound to come out of your speaker after the sample goes into it's SPDIF input. e.g., if you had an analogue centre speaker, and DSP fronts, the surround processor would now delay the analogue signal by 7.5ms so that they are all aligned when they come out.
I'm a bit suprised this wasn't there before. A 7.5ms error is equivalent to getting your speaker distances wrong by 2.5 metres. I'm going to assume that they were closer than that before, but not all quite spot on.
It certainly explains why they recommended that you fine tune speaker distances to solidify the image, rather than stick with measured values.
I'd expect better imaging/soundstage with this mod....Trifield should work better if you have differnt front speakers (and didn't set distances by ear) anybody found anything like that? You might find that depth now needs tweaking.
Doesn't apply to me, because I'm financially limited to analogue at the moment :-(
Hope that helps.
Regards,
Mark.

I wonder if I could ask of you learned gents (and possibly ladies) how difficult the upgrade is to do at home? Also, how do I find out what issues have been fixed by the firmware - when I upgrade drivers for my PC cards, there is a sort of running total in a text file - this would be useful to see whether it's worth doing. (I have a 596 at 1.22 and a 565Z3 at 6.0)

Hi
The 565 uses firmware blown into EPROM. It cannot be upgraded without changing the chip which must be obtained from Meridian themselves subject to cost and availability - it is possible to change yourself. Whilst I have not done it myself with Meridian equipment (other have and I am sure they will give further assistance), a little care, common sense and dexterity is normally all that is required when changing chips. I believe that the 6.2a is the latest firmware and had a fix for certain Meridian DVD players so it would certainly be worth asking your local country dealership or, failing that, Meridian UK technical support.
The 596 upgrade is however flash upgradable using a Windows based PC and null modem serial cable. If your PC does not have a serial cable then a USB->Serial converter and null modem cable can be used and relatively inexpensive. I would like to say that flash upgrading by PC is easy and it is if you know what you are doing and it all goes as planned, but unfortunately there can be any number of gremlins that can crop up from things as basic as not configuring the PC serial port to data transfer issues. Meridian seem to have recently made some progress on the reliability of latter, a problem that seemed to have affected some type of USB->Serial converters when used with the Meridian upload process even though the converter had worked flawlessly with other equipment performing similar operations.
On the new downloads section of the Meridian web site, the more tab normally gives a release note listing the changes. I see that on the 500 series this is not available. The change between 1.2x and 1.8x is significant but it is possible you may not notice many changes. It is my understanding that Meridian have unified the core code between different players across the ranges, G9x, 59x, 80x etc so that much of the code is shared. So for example a bug fix to say disc playability is available to all models - assuming it is released to the latter models - a bif if. I personally would feel that this upgrade is worthy of serious consideration.
Hope this helps

With 5.10 my rear DSP 5k speakers are all silent. My DSP 5200 are fine though.
Anyone else have problems with 5.10 and DSP5k?

And this 7.5ms upgrade how does that work with my digital SW1600 subwooder still at old level. BTW I backleveled my DSP5k speakers FW to 5.04 and now they produce sounds again

Crion,
I had the same problem with my DSP5000's.
If you 'Type' your speakers after you update the firmware they will work fine.
Cheers
