Sorry Harry!

I didn't realise there was a response to my comment.

Yes, the beta made a substantial change in the sound quality. IMO The inner detail in the image is clearer. So it sounds more three dimensional. Some might think its more forward sounding. I'm pretty happy with it. Its the most stable firmware I've ever had in a 568 and I used every version since the 568 was released. My 568.2 never needs rebooting with the Beta. At least in my setup it has been perfect.

My 598 has been pretty good with 1.89. I had a lot of reboots and finally Meridian agreed to give me the beta. They have to be close to releasing it by now.

Just realized you were asking about the 598. No I don't hear any difference with the newer firmware. Just more stable.

Ron

Sorry to ask such a basic question, but the search function has not returned the answer.

How can I check the firmware version of my 861?

thanks

If it's the same as all other Meridian units, press the display button whilst the machine is in standby. The firmware version will then be shown on the display.

Cheers

Will we ever see new released updates again from Meridian? We know they are working on it since I have newer beta firmware but why don't they ever release these to everyone?

The last time they updated the download section was in April 2005!

Well Lets hope so! This has been stated before that new firmware was to be released soon and that was several months ago. Maybe not by you Nick but I have read it here on the forum. I may faint if or when I see new firmware released. smile

I spoke with Meridian about two weeks ago, and it is imminent.

From what I heard yesterday the upgrade is now even more imminent than usual... laugh

It's not at the download area yet - still the 2005-02-09 version for G98 is flagged as new  - but if I didn't misunderstand it the official G98 FW has just been sent to dealers.

...and it's a Kinderegg, not "just" giving scaling to 1080P and fewer problems with discs/fewer reboots - but also a surprise upgrade: Higher Sound Quality! It will be interesting to hear this upgrade... smile

FWIW....My 598 just came back from a Huntingdon vacation and now sports v1.89. All units coming from the mothership now have it apparantly. HQ mentioned that it has been tested for quite a while and appears to be very stable.***

Therefore, I believe that this will be available 'soon' on the web. I'm guessing that other s/w will naturally be uploaded also (repeat...I am guessing)

Last time I saw G98 and 598 s/w released, they shared much of the same release notes and I'd expect that much of their codes have now further converged.

How does it sound?

Bloomin' fantastic !!! laugh laugh

PS *** don't moan too much if it takes a while to release if you also want them to have tested it thoroughly. Can't have cake and eat it...etc

I've been very pleased with 1.89 too since I'd had problems right from upgrading my 596.Although they ( quite correctly) prefer to maximize their own navigation software towards playing perfectly authored (DVD-A) discs , maybe because there are so few of them around they've eased up ?

I mean if a 200$ Pioneer machine can play it its not acceptable that a player in Ms price category cannot.

Or maybe they've just hired a better software writer ? wink

~M~

P.S. Maybe the delay is they just want to call it Version 2 and be done with it ? smile
