Daniel,
I think youre absolutely right. So I watched Letters in 16x9 mode with the letter boxing on the screen. It certainly detracted from the cinematic effect. Very, very disappointing.

We've talked a lot about the future of HD being download... here's an interesting poll on this subject at AVS Forum

Very interesting , Mark .
I prefer a physical disc to a download . I care about the movie ; the extras are , well , extra ...

Good to see No.6 from this list has been brought to the attention of Amirm over at Avs :

http://www.highdefdigest.com/news/show/Joshua_Zyber/Commentary/Memo_to_the_Studios:_Ten_Easy_Ways_to_Improve_High-Def_Discs/728

so there's still hope for the subtitle issue to get sorted out eventually.

Heck Manus. I'm really depressed now! It is really incredible how incompetent large corporate organizations can be.

Keep the faith !

Check out the insiders thread over at Avs ( probably the calmest one over there smile . Some of them ( from both sides ) do listen !

I suppose its early days in HD formats and we can but hope it will improve but having said that , what the hell are THEY watching the movies on ????

Course , it never would've happened if they'd listened to Spielberg and we all had 21:9 tvs wink

Depending on selection obviously , that could be great news . The only thing about it is having to buy from Amazon.com , those smiley faced boxes are a
customs magnet over here at any rate .

It would be interesting to see if they have already got a list sorted and if something like 'Brick' for example would make it . Maybe some gems from the Sundance Festival too ?

The problem with a poll of early adopters/ enthusiasts is that it is not representative of the mass market. Id prefer to have movies on a disc that could be also stored on a local hard drive. Should the drive fail, I have my original purchase.

btw- got the snakes and arrows DVD. Its a DVD video- not dvds- yet the 2.0 track, which I think is 16 bit 48khz - so its just a tiny notch improvement over the CD sounds a lot like the CD but the treble is a little crisper. I like it! Also they have a great making of the album documentary video and its well dome with he band members providing forthright opinions. Overall of you really like rush - its worth a look.

Watched "Shooter" last night. a solid HDDVD overall. Good, but not terrific image- a few shots are out of focus but colors are realistic and have good depth. The sound is very good but doesnt have any truly special moments. The story is also good. It could have been very good but the movie does not handle the love story well and that lets down the whole movie- but that said- its still a good movie.

Jerry

Just feasted on Shaun of the Dead , Hot Fuzz ( brilliant PQ/SQ) and The Island , all really great presentations .

Im keeping my eye on France too as I've seen 'Hannibal' advertised for imminent release and really like it.

Its going to be expensive this winter with Face off , Jack Ryan Collection , Wyatt Earp ,Hero , The Wild Bunch , Erin Brockovich ,Insude Man , Mr. and Mrs. Smith , Underworld and Blade Runner and the Kubrick Films all on my list of preorders wink

Oh , and it seems New Line have announced their first release so there could be trouble if Se7en or Lord of the Rings appear .

Its all good , so far ,
