Yes. RAFLMAO (rolling around on the floor...) Watched Letters From Iwo Jima tonight on HDDVD. Looks good- and a very good movie. Way to go Clint Eastwood. One annoyance though: the subtitles in the black bars- in a 2.35:1 playback setup it means I have to watch it as 1.85:1 and then watch it letterboxed. grrrrrrrrrr best regards, Jerry

More a shortcoming of the player than Clint Eastwood.

It's not really the player either. What`s unfortunate is that the placement of player-generated subtitles does actually seem to be dictated by the way the disc is encoded.
There are some anime HD DVDs out/or coming out in Japan for example which boast the ability to select different fonts and position the subtitles where you wish. On Bluray, thanks to 2.35:1 owners at the AVS forum, Sony is now to do something similar. When Immortal Beloved comes out, it too will offer the feature to position the subtitles where you wish.
Great feature, but why it`s not mandatory to either format`s hardware spec is beyond me as it`s no guarantee all studios will offer such a choice on their discs.

Jerry, Have you tried playing with the A B C D buttons on the Toshiba remote ? I watched Brotherhood of the Wolf and 2 of those buttons move the subtitles around on some discs .

Arcade- That firmware is not for the XA1. Neil- its an HDMI problem. Try reselecting the input or resetting the devices. Manus- I tried all the buttons to no avail best regards, Jerry

Bad news , Jerry , I'm afraid its a disc thing ; from DvdTalk review :
" Subs & Dubs: Optional subtitles - English, English captions for the hearing impaired, French, or Spanish. Alternate language tracks - N/A.
The English subtitles are positioned half-in/half-out of the movie image, which is a tremendous nuisance for 2.35:1 Constant Image Height projection viewers "

~M~ Someone did explain the ability to allow the user to position subtitles is purely up to the content provider doing the encode a few posts above.

I did read that , Daniel . But surely the content provider didnt do their job right then , eh ? Surely a Japanese - based film which requires subtitles would have been a perfect vehicle to show off a new feature on a new format trying to win the hearts , minds and wallets of movie buffs everywhere ? I dont have a 2:35:1 screen myself but I would be disappointed too if that facility was not included. Regards, ~M~

Sadly I'm not convinced many studios care, or are even aware of those with 2.35:1 set ups. I wish they were, or more to the point, I wish player generated subtitle placement was mandatory to the hardware and not optional to the disc so as that we didn't have to worry about the studio delivering this type of feature.
Sony got the message from AVS forum members at least and appear to be offering the user the option as of the release of Immortal Beloved. Pity they had not made this decision before releasing Volver.

Having only discovered recently that I've never seen Kurosawa's (and therefore anyone's) masterpiece, I am sooooo looking forward to this!
BTW, this was originally slated for March, but the UK release was put back. Mark - please don't tell me it's been available elsewhere for months! Aaaaaaarrrrgggggg! Delayed again...
