Mark, I don't know- at the salt mine now- I will check this for you when I am back at home later. Btw- I know how you feel about the workers- there are times I try to hide the goodies...

Mark. Just tried Phantom of the Opera on my XA1. The TrueHD 5.1 soundtrack comes through as 5.1 DTS All the discrete multichannel presets are available. On another note, is Phantom one of the discs afflicted with the -10dB soundtrack? I'm having to set my G68 volume to much higher levels than normal.

Great intel VK! I think Phantom is indeed one of these.... as to the Matrix sequels, I always had a problem with the sequels but I never could say it quite as well as this fellow so since I think this guy sums up my feelings so well I would just quote it. from http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/read.php?ID=28274 The Matrix was clearly conceived of as a single picture. At the end, Neo is The One. According to Morpheus, that means he can "reshape The Matrix in his image." In other words, he's become God (or, at the very least, the Messiah). So for two sequels to exist smacks of revisionism, and that's evident right from the beginning of the picture. Despite the insistence by the filmmakers that this series was always intended as a trilogy, you can tell that the second two films are not from the same creative pool as the first. The moment Neo cannot simply obliterate agents or change The Matrix with a wave of his hand, you know you're in for something that has to rewrite its own rules, never a good thing for a story. best regards, Jerry

Yup just tested this and, as you guys found out, we are getting 5.1 sound. Unless we can find evidence to suggest otherwise, I suspect we are getting 2ch TrueHD downmix for L/R and the other channels are the core DD stream. Lipsync on Matrix was also good via this route.
I now need to do some extended listening to see if it's worth going down this downsampled TrueHD route, rather than running with the default DD+ stream.

Well, well...
Quick google session pulls up:
"The firmware, version 2.0, will update Toshiba's HD-XA1, HD-A1, and HD-D1 players... First and foremost, the update adds five-channel support for Dolby True HD, up from just two [channels] in the previous version."
So I guess we *are* getting 48kHz downsample all around...

15 days to Ran...

Having only discovered recently that I've never seen Kurosawa's (and therefore anyone's) masterpiece, I am sooooo looking forward to this!
BTW, this was originally slated for March, but the UK release was put back. Mark - please don't tell me it's been available elsewhere for months!

It's been out in France for a couple of weeks, but the French release has no English subtitles (various other European subs, though, including Norwegian, so works well enough for me).

http://www.audioholics.com/news/editorials/10-more-reasons-hd-dvd-failed Yet another poorly titled article on the State of the HD Nation . Ive actually e-mailed this guy before for manipulating Press releases to his own ends ( last time he edited out HD-DVD but not BD from a Jvc release about their D-Ila projector ). Is the HD landscape really as depressing as the picture he paints......? ~M~
Mostly harmless. Comfortably numb.

I'm not even going to read the article but I think his opening paragraph sums his insights up:
"It's been almost a year now since I wrote my popular yet controversial diatribe on the demise of the competing high definition DVD formats."
It was over a year ago he wrote about their demise, yet both formats are still here, both formats are regularly releasing titles and pre-announcements are still being made. Basically he'll keep writing the same article hoping that one day he'll be able to say "told you so".
