And then he made those stinking pirate movies... (But yes, as much as I hate them, I have ordered the Blu-Ray discs just in case I get desperate for something to watch!) Daniel, please don't tell me you think these movies are great Mark

I think the first one is pretty fun. Not as good as it should have been (tedious writing for the Knightley and Bloom characters with performances to match that further drag their scenes down like a ship`s anchor). It`s a little muddled the way the script keeps going back and forth to the same locations extending the running time needlessly, but on the whole I think the movie could have turned out a hell of a lot worse. Depp, Rush, some of the minor supporting cast and the effects work save it.
I felt the second however was an overdrawn mess and I hear the third is little better (though I like Zimmer's score to the third one which I got in the post yesterday. I'm not usually fond of his action scores but there's a fair bit of variety this time round. A pleasant surprise). I'll say one thing I did like about the 2nd one however, and that's the CG for Davy Jones and his crew. That was some of ILMs best ever work.

Daniel,
I can definitely recommend the Pioneer plasma panels. The new 50 & 60 inch models that are out soon will have a full HD panel, which i think will be worth a good look.
Regards......Ian

Fantastic. I hope they've given it a good master. This will be the first time Universal have actually handled releasing the film after acquiring it when Polygram folded (Big Lebowski is also going to be another one they`ll be doing for the first time themselves after getting it from Polygram). Regards......Ian The 1080p models I think will be a bit too dear for my pocket when they come out, Ian, but the 42inch 1024x768 model at 1800 is heading the shortlist right now. Looking forward to seeing them in action as word out of CES and more recently from the press launch in Italy was very encouraging.

arrghhh- we've hidden the good master in Davey Jones' Locker!
(sorry- couldn't help me self!)
(thought Pirates 1 was entertaining, 2 was better than I thought- I thought it would be terrible and it was just OK- and I suspect 3 will be in the just OK range. though the sfx were excellent I really did not like the look of Davey Jones- just creeps me out!) best regards, Jerry

been out of country for a while and out of touch a bit; Was on the Disney transAtlantic cruise and they showed Pirates3 premier on the ship - pretty cool;
Much better than #2 IMO and close to #1 level in story and characters etc. Awesome special effects and audio as #2 had. Overall a good compliment to the trilogy (and an obvious lead in to #4 )...
Reviews of the BD disk (1 and 2) are stellar (but that should be in the other thread I guess)

Sat down to watch The Fountain again, this time with my partner, only to find my projector has developed a hardware problem. And only 206 hours on the bulbs :_( No more home cinema for me until this gets resolved! At least it's still under warranty.

Well, I had a flash of inspiration, which seems to have cured the problem. When I first installed the projector I had to hard reset it each screening by removing the power cord to fix an HDMI issue I was having. PD provided a firmware fix for this and I've not had to unplug the projector for the past 5 months. So I tried the hard reset this morning and it worked - everything looks ok now. I guess the firmware got "confused" somehow and only a hard reset would fix. Weclome back to our scheduled programme! Mark
