Manus,
How does the IA45 with lossless quality compare to the DD+ via digital?

Thats wierd! I didn't notice any lip sync problem at all with The Matrix. I'll have to check the jump scene again...I didn't notice the noise in the sky. I use SPDIF as well and I did notice that TrueHD still sounded a little bit better than DD+ even though they were both played back at the same DD bitrate. TrueHD sounded slightly more dynamic with more ambient. After the fight scene the sound of the cement falling off the pillar after they entered the building elevator to rescue Morphius is a good example. DD+ sounded dull with a short decay ambient yet with the TrueHD the ambient or decay sounded full and natural. Just overall more natural sounding. Even the foot step sounds in that same scene were more natural. The rifle falling and hitting the floor sounded better...more real. Very pleased with these movies so far.

Jerry,
You have to crank it on 861 but its well worth it IMO . However , I would point out that its NOT Meridian quality sound . It makes me all aquiver to guess how good M's quality will make it sound laugh

Havent got around to DD+ just yet but didnt notice any Lipsynch problems on The Matrix either

Ugh. Excuse the slightly off topic rant but I could bloody weep...

Two years looking for a new TV, constant lusting over Sony's SXRD based 55inch rear projection set for the past 12 months, the set gets knocked down at John Lewis to 999 with the stand, delivery, and five year warranty (plus further discounts via quidco and a 20 voucher for first time online customers making it about 945) and do I have the money to cover it in the Bank before Thursday? Do I heck.... and there are only four left [with five having gone in the last two hours] so there's bugger all chance of there being any left come the end of the week.

I am the master of bad timing.

My foray into hi def hits continued delays (the 360 HD DVD drive is down to 109 at Amazon now too. *sobs*). Raining on a bank holiday too. What a wretched day this has turned out to be. I shall crawl back into my low def hole now...

Such a shame. Superb television. It had everything. Contrast, response time, no burn in, good deinterlacing, low power consumption, size and resolution... Sony allegedly have no plans to continue RPTVs in Europe anymore which means we wont be getting the slimmer, glossy black SXRD sets America is due in October.

I'll have to go back to deciding between a plasma or lcd now. Either way it'll be double the price for a smaller screen (and lower resolution if I go plasma). The higher cost of a flat panel will bump me back into having to wait until the autumn/winter of course. The SXRD was just a bargain I could not have resisted had the timing been that little bit better and stock had lasted out one more week.

On the upside [as I struggle to find one smile ]. I guess it would mean I can go back to thinking of having a floor standing centre channel eventually.

So it turns out the CII has a firmware update that allows people to force colorspace but its only on the component output- my projector wants RGB over HDMI.

Now that said- the output section has several adjustments, including the ability to adjust individual red green and blue channels. if I played the HDDVD DVE 601/709 pattern and calibrated each channel so it was correct to this pattern, would I now be in the 709 space? If so I could save different output profiles so I would be properly setup for SD and HD sources.

On the Matrix- I watched again last night. There is a lip sync problem- but then I remembered the posts here saying they did not notice it and they listened to the True HD track. So even though I cannot get the THD track directly into the 861, I figured Ill select it and see what happens.... WOW- there is a noticeable improvement over the DD+ track, even with the THD being "downscaled" to DTS. And - there's no lip sync problem with this track! So- I advise anyone watching the Matrix, select the THD track!

The noise I noted is really film grain- look at the jump scene when Neo is saying "rigggghtttt- free your mind..." and you see the bright sky above where he is standing on the building as the camera pulls back before he begins running. I dont think its a digital artifact but simply some grain thats showing up due to the overexposed sky in the shot. As a matter of fact the entire movie has a decent amount of film grain to it. I dont think this is a problem with the transfer but I have gotten so used to such clean transfers that this is a little bit of a disappointment.

Jerry

I don't think so. Because the rec 601 bars look the same as the background it means you have rec 601 decoding - we know this. But it also means the 709 bars aren't displayed correctly because they are also rec 601 mapped. So if you were to adjust those to the background (which is also rec 601 mapped) you'd be compounding errors. I did try this and the resulting image definitely looked wrong to me. I'd stick with rec 601 until a full solution presents itself.

A melancholy masterpiece!

Heartbreaking, haunting and beautiful; often all at once. The central performances from Hugh Jackman and Rachel Weiss are magnificent. And the film itself was an absolute pleasure to behold - HD-DVD really does it justice - and was a massive improvement on what I saw at the cinema.

Daniel 2 vs 0 Mark

:p

I have to wonder why my take on it is so different this time around. There are a few factors - easiest is that the cinema presentation undermined the film. Then there are my friends - I guess their opinion sways me more than I realised. And then there is the film - I tried to decipher it on the first screening - this time I simply let it unfold and not read into it beyond the central story of the scientist, his dying wife and her book...

This film just moved up into my top 20!

"appreciate what you've got because basically I'm fantastic"

Note to Warner: Please hurry 2001 onto the shelves in hi-definition so that Mark can admit that it too is completely brilliant.
