Yes, yes, and yes - completely agree; Pick a format or do both.
Do you have an Amazon wishlist available to view? Daniel, take note! The last thing I put on mine was a Tosh XA1 and some kid with glasses and a shedload of white chocolate actually bought it for me! [/b] hilarious - (and his Pony too... ) me three... and I can't express how much these formats take the 'hobby' to the next level.... (thanks Mark) ken

+1 to all the early adopters! Thanks Mark. Daniel- isnt there a hack I heard of to the Xbox drive so you can use it without the xbox? This would save you some money. I guess its just for the computer. http://www.dvguru.com/2006/11/13/cheapest-hd-DVD-player-yet-xbox-360-player-hacked/ best regards, Jerry

There is a hack yes (and getting it to run with a PC is how those guys managed to find all the AACS encryption keys). I'd like the console itself though now that I have seen a good deal, and it's a surprise just how good playback of HD DVD via the 360 is [there are some audio issues a forthcoming software update is meant to iron out however]. I`m just still apprehensive about investing right now for numerous reasons, so in a way I'm where three of you where before the Marky Bar kid rode into town (the difference being that I know what I'm misisng out on before owning any kind of playback device ). I accept what`s been said with regards to the thought that even if it does fail, its not as if one`s collection of discs would stop working the day a format dies.

FYI, I tried HD DVE last night with my XA1 running v2.0 firmware directly into my JVC HD1.
The Tosh was outputting 4:2:2 YCbCr over HDMI and there was no BTB crush. Viewing the colour gamut test pattern through the filters the colours looked consistent in the Rec 709 pattern and not in the Rec 601 pattern (although there were clearly some colour decoder issues in the JVC that I will want to correct with a VP).
In the restaurant scene 601/709 side-by-side, you could see that some of the colours in the 601 image didn't look natural, but I reckon that an untrained eye would have a hard time spotting the issues without a side-by-side. If you know what you're looking for then sure, but this 601/709 stuff is still pretty new for most of us.
I will probably upgrade the XA1 to 2.2 this weekend and check again.

Was this via the Lumagen or direct to the pj? [edit]Never mind, I see it was direct. Could you now try via your Lumagen (you do have one, right?) and let me know what happens? The fact that you see 701 direct to the projector strengthens my feeling that the Lumagen is at fault here...[/edit] Cheers, Mark

Check out: http://www.highdefdigest.com/ Matrix got a great review and Heroes is coming to HD DVD too! WHOOO HOOOOO.... In case anyone is wondering I liken Heroes to eating the best dessert- it is a very engaging and addictive show if you are willing to let it. BSG, Heroes, Matrix, good stuff coming to HD DVD. best regards, Jerry

I'll be picking up Heroes. It's currently showing on the Sci-Fi channel over here in a 4:3 crop :| Great show. I'll also be picking up BSG as that's another standout show. Matrix already ordered. A bit disappointed that the DD+ track is only 640kbps as that is my current route for sound.

Good grief. They keep getting cheaper and cheaper: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Toshiba-HD-...ectronics&qid=1179406018&sr=1-13 Why was there never a region hack for DVD playback on these? Argh... It seems such a ludicrous oversight not to have leaked a hack onto the interweb.

I'd be very interested to hear your results.
I've been investigating this for a couple of days now and think that the problem actually lies with the Lumagen or even my projector and not necessarily the sources as initially suspected. I've put test patterns from 2 HD-DVD players, a Blu-Ray player and a test pattern generator through my system and they all show the same problem...
Cheers,
Mark Mark, I just tried it and I think I am in 601 land My setup is HDDVD 1080i over HDMI to Crystalio II which outputs HDMI to a DVI adaptor on the Runco vx 55 projector. Looking at the colors and which decoder looks best here are the results: Red: 601 matches, 709 looks a little too dark Green: 601 looks a little too dark, 709 looks considerably brighter Blue: 601 matches, 709 looks a little too dark. So with the R & B channels I get a match to 601 and the green is close. With the 709 I am off with the R&B and I am off with the green. Like you said- if I never looked at this pattern I would think my setup looks stunning. I just watched Donnie Brasco (Bluray) and it looks wonderful- a bit dated but frankly the effect is very very convincing the kind of solid, vivid but not video game vivid you get with film. Glad you put me on the next gen train. best regards, Jerry
