A brilliant comparison page for various formats: http://home.arcor.de/madshi/serenity.html Shows images overlaid and you can click formats to see immediate comparisons. It certainly leaves no doubt about the difference between SD and HD Enjoy Mark

In my local HMV today I noticed that HD-DVD's have been moved from a non descript single bay display in the middle of the shop to a double display at the front of the shop, of the same size as, and right next to, Blu-ray.
Ironically, they now occupy exactly the same display area taken up by the PS3 at launch. Not sure where the PS3 was relegated to - probably along side the other games machines.
So it would appear that HMV don't see HD-DVD as a dying format. The only noticable difference between the HD-DVD and Blu-ray displays were that Blu-ray appeared to have more titles - by virtue that HD-DVD titles were mostly displayed front cover facing forward, whilst blu-ray had more titles displayed spine forward and less front cover facing forward.
Meridian owner since 1992 Prime & PSU, Focal Elear headphones, Roon (ROCK 8Gi5 NUC), Explorer 1 & 2, F80. 200/203, various Sonos (via Roon).

The HD DVD one looks a little soft vs. the broadcast HD and SkyHD looks the best to me!!!!! BTW, it does seem that v2.2 firmware is looking good. Edit: Doh! Just realized that these are by madshi. Gives the screenshots extra credibility.

You can see plenty of artefacts in the broadcast stuff, plus you can be sure that it's been artificially sharpened...

Its amazing how good VC-1 encodes look. Mpeg can still look good but I do see artifacts more.
I love my new player though! HD DVD rocks even on my old 1366x768 panel projector using component. I wish I could get the new JVC 1080p projector but I really can't spend the cash right now. I need a long throw projector that will light up a 120" diagonal screen and the JVC is the only one that will do it right now. Plus the reviews are quite good on it. I just have to hold out another year.

Using HD-DVE today I verified that neither the Toshiba HD-XA1 nor the XE1 outputs the correct HD colour space. Anybody know of *any* HD player which gives rec.709 for HD sources?
And for those using a Lumagen to force the HD-XA1 into YCrCb mode thinking that this gives you correct colour space, as I did, think again, it doesn't - you only get SD colour space via this route. The only way to get Rec.709 is to use RGB and then use the Lumagen's inverse 601->709 function. This function does not work on the YCrCb stream - I have put a request into Lumagen to ask for this to be added.
*sigh*
Now we just need AVIA II Blu-Ray to verify what we get from Blu-Ray players.
Cheers,
Mark

Mark. Are we certain that firmware 2.2 doesn't solve the colourspace issues?
