I dont know- I tried a Google search and I didnt get much- but I did not kill myself. But it does not surprise me that your set cannot accept 720p- this tells us something. 720p scans faster than 1080i- I think- the memory is a bit rusty. My guess is your set does not show 1080P because that would be even faster. I think my advice about 480P being the sharpest rate for your set is likely to be true.

Actually, I think it is because it is a 2001 model(Mits MS-65857)!

Yep- displaying 1080P would require two things that would really push the price: 1080i deinterlacing and then more robust CRTs. Trust me on this: 480P for DVD.

Anyone (Mark_H? ) seen the HDDVD of Planet Earth yet? If so, I'd love to know what they've done with the production / frame-rate conversion.

I know CRT is dead in RPTVs. Is it the same for projectors?

Pretty much. Just about everything now is some form of DLP or LCOS.

I must say I couldn't be happier with my new HD-XA2. Great player so far and Planet Earth is just amazing. The SPDIF output sounds great. Not sure if I will ever bother with the analog outputs since I have a 568.2 and I would need three 2ch 24/96k ADC's to do it.

A lot of people seem to feel the same way; The higher bit rate digital being virtually indistinguishable from the lossless tracks...

I've always felt that high bit rate "vanilla" DD and DTS sound excellent. And of course the bit-rate can be focused where it matters, the centre channel in particular. In particular, I've bought DVDs with the "classic" DTS soundtracks: Apollo 13, Saving Private Ryan, Twister, etc. They sound truly great.
And remember the scene in Star Wars in Ben's house/dwelling/shack/hovel when he's lying to Luke about his father (and Luke's trying hard not to cut off his own leg when playing with the light sabre for the first time)? I love listening to this at reference volume. Scares the be-Jesus* out of me, but it is sublime.
I hope, sincerely, that when M comes up with its HDMI solution, it's an upgrade in the 1000 ballpark. Any more and I'll really have to consider if it's worth it.

I just watched Sahara in HD tonight! WOW! Looked awesome. I was listening to the DD+ soundtrack via the SPDIF output and noticed very little in the rear channels. I switched to the DTS soundtrack and the rears came alive. Has anybody else noticed this? I'm wondering if its just a different mix or maybe a conversion to AC3 problem in the player? Now that I think of it on friday it seemed like Planet Earth had very little surround info and thats also DD+.
