Just had disappointing reply from bbcamerica about Planet Earth stating that they couldnt include the extra material because they were only shot in 'standard definition' eek

Who are they trying to kid ? Most Hd releases still
only feature SD extras but its better than nothing .

I rarely watch extras - and if I do I prefer the extras to be on a separate disc so that the main feature gets the maximum bits available.

FYI. Firmware v2.1 now available for the XA1 and A1. On the Lumagen forum, they are saying that it solves colour-space issues with Lumagen processors.

I'm not sure if I want to do the upgrade! I almost sxat myself last time when the player errored-out at the end of the update process. It turned out that this was "normal", but it's not what you want with an imported player...

Thread here .

There seem to be some rumblings about 2.1 breaking HDMI>DVI connectivity. I need to do some more research before upgrading...

On my rig, 2.1 works a tiny bit better. Before when a disc would go from the company logo (lets say Universals planet logo with music) and then loading the movie the HDMI would lose lock and the projector would report "no signal" then the screen would turn purple and red and then blue and then Id get the regular picture.

With 2.1 these things are banished and the projector seems to keep a lock the whole way through.

The rig is XA1->HDMI->Crystalio CII VP->HDMI out->DVI IN on runco vx-55 projector.

As to extras- Im with Mark in that I normally view them as- well "extra" and Im a "meat and potatoes" kind of guy. I don't usually want them, but I do want these extras. Theres only one way to do it- get the DVD as well- making you buy it twice. Theres your answer. It was probably just not worth their effort to put another disc in the HD DVD packaging or some other economic reason.

best regards,
Jerry

That's a good improvement. I am seeing exactly the same thing with my v2.0 XA1 straight into my JVC HD1.

HMDI handshaking sucks - it causes so many problems and why does it seem to make multiple handshakes while starting the discs?! I don't have any such "no signal" issues with my system though as long as the Lumagen is turned on prior to the HD-DVD player - otherwise I get no picture at all.

ditto to Mark's experience; I now leave my Lumagen on permanently to avoid HDMI handshaking issues -
My Lumagen is dvi input (HDMI source > dvi) eliminating the HDMI handshaking altogether - but direct connect HDMI source to display can be a drag at times due to handshaking issues;

I must say my new Apple TV seems to handshake very well however, so maybe newer firmware is better...

" I don't usually want them, but I do want these extras "

Me too. But in this case there was a mini 10 minute making of to accompany each episode and then a fuller 150 minute examination of the lengths to which they had to go to capture the stunning footage. I may have bought it on its own !

I dont believe that 1x , 2x, 3 or 4 x 30gb Hd-DVD couldn't have been used to accomodate this material.

Pity. It'll be great to see the series again all the same.

'fraid not, Ken. The Lumagen *is* handshaking with the player, even though you are using DVI. Try turning off the Lumagen and your player will complain 'NO HDMI'

The Lumagen allows you to configure your DVI to behave as an HDMI port so that you can specify the handshake parameters in order to force the source to deliver the best quality format for the data.
