Thanks Njål. Looks like that DVD will be on the Xmas list (unless it comes out on Blu-Ray as well).

Jerry, Jerry, Jerry! It was only on a 42" plasma... (saw it again this morning). I'm sure it would look lousy in a large cave. wink laugh

I wouldn't count on it. I've a feeling Disney's animated catalogue tactic is to issue films on Bluray when they're in the middle of their moratorium period on DVD, that way it'd make a Bluray release the only version a consumer could buy for a while, thus hopefully nudging consumers to make the format leap. I could be wrong.

Disney's Bluray trailer on a lot of their recent DVDs lists everything from Little Mermaid, to The Lion King and Finding Nemo as “coming soon” at the end, but Disney often has an amusing definition of “soon.” At the very least until Disney is 100% sure that Bluray is an unstoppable force I can't imagine them digging out some true animated classics.

Good point Daniel.

How we give this a spin:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...f_rd _p=281000501&pf_rd_i=B000MRAAJM

Planet Earth. A buddy says this is amazing. I ordered it as it looks fantastic. Its available in BRD and DVD too. I ordered the HDDVD as my way of sending a message.

best regards,
Jerry

I ve ordered that too , Jerry . It looks brilliant .I've also e-mailed Bbc America to find out why they've dropped all the extras ( according to their own website ) ???? Makes no sense at all confused

Apparently there was 2.5 hour making of documentary on the SD version which I would say would be very interesting.

I wasn't going to bother with this, but while sat in a semi-daze yesterday evening after a day full of bottle feeding and nappy changing I caught some of this on BBC HD and became totally engrossed. It occurred to me that not only will I enjoy it but so perhaps will the baby (assuming HD discs are still being used when he's old enough!) and I placed an order.

My only concern now is picture quality - I ordered some of the Atlas Revealed series, based on Peter Brackes' very positive review over at High-Def Digest only to be disappointed by picture quality - this TV stuff, while generally nice, carries all the artefacts you'd expect to see on DVD and overall is *below* the quality we are seeing on movie transfers.

Peter clearly needs a bigger display as he seems to miss a lot of issues that are easy to spot on a projection screen...

If it doesn't look good enough you will have to put on some Vaseline'd glasses to conceal artifacts, because the content is great.

Shouldn't have any picture problems with this , Beeb
shot it all in HD .

Bit bummed out though if they replace Sir David Attenborough with Sigourney Weaver !!!! I mean , Ripley's great but he has one of those hypnotic Anthony Hopkins pay-attention-or-else kind of voices !

Might be worth tracking a review or two before release date to see if any of the extras have been reinstated too.

Depends on the parameters of the recording codec *and* the disc encoding codec...

As long as there isn't anything permanently distracting this should be a joy to behold.

Planet Earth was a mix of everything. 35mm, 16mm and some HD. I never did find out if it was shot 24fps or 25fps, though I still suspect the latter as it was probably post produced in 25fps/25p.

I'm fairly sure Warner will be doing the encoding on BBCs behalf, which should hopefully mean a good VC1 job. The US release is getting Attenborough's narration though - at least I seem to recall that being mentioned in the press release.

Attenborough is an outspoken Atheist, isn't he? ;-)
