Just in Time For Father`s Day Gift Givers
The Entire Legendary Matrix Series
in the Splendor of 1080p High Definition Brilliance with More Than 35 Hours of Bonus Features

Burbank, California (March 22, 2007) -- If ever a film series was meant to be seen in HD DVD, that series is now here. The Matrix, the legendary, groundbreaking sci-fi film, and its visually dazzling second and third installments, The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions were produced with future technology execution in mind. The Matrix, the first DVD to sell one million copies and to date a $1 billion worldwide franchise, will be part of two new definitive high definition collections to be released by Warner Home Video and Village Roadshow Pictures on May 22.

The Ultimate Matrix Collection, for the hardcore Matrix fan, presents the complete adventures of machine battling truth-seekers Neo (Keanu Reeves), Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) and Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne) in all three of the Wachowski brothers` post-modern epic films. This collection will contain, for the first time, all three HD DVD versions of The Matrix series with more than 35 hours of bonus material in 5 double sided discs. The second offering, The Complete Matrix Trilogy, contains HD DVD versions of the three Matrix films and the three Revisited features in a 3-disc set.

Both The Ultimate Matrix Collection and The Complete Matrix Trilogy come with the In-Movie Experience (IME), an exclusive interactive feature that allows viewers to enjoy new ways of accessing interviews and other material. For these titles, the IME will let viewers experience the evolution of all The Matrix`s ground breaking elements through the recollections of the cast and creative team.

The Matrix Series on HD-DVD is the definitive and ultimate film compilation for the ultimate hi-def format, plus will no doubt make the ultimate Father`s Day gift for sci-fi film lovers. The Ultimate Matrix Collection will be available for $119.99 SRP and The Complete Matrix Trilogy available for $99.99 SRP. Order due date for all is April 17. Blu-ray Disc versions of both collections will be released later this year.

The Films

The Matrix (1999)

The box-office sensation follows the trials of a young computer programmer (Keanu Reeves) searching to determine the deepest reality of a post-Apocalyptic world. His journey uncovers a web of deceit and massive computer-generated illusions obscuring the truth. As the character Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne) said to Neo (Reeves), “No one can be told what The Matrix is. You have to see it for yourself.” The same is true for this mind-blowing movie.

The film also stars Carrie-Anne Moss and was produced by Joel Silver. The Matrix was written and directed by Andy and Larry Wachowski, who spent years nurturing and refining the movie`s breakthrough concepts.

The Matrix Reloaded (2003)
In the powerful second chapter of the Matrix trilogy, Neo (Keanu Reeves), Trinity (Moss) and Morpheus (Fishburne) lead the revolt against the Machine Army as it attacks Zion, the last human city on earth, unleashing their arsenal of extraordinary skills and weaponry against the systematic forces of repression and exploitation. In their quest to save the human race from extinction, they gain greater insight into the construct of The Matrix and Neo`s pivotal role in the fate of mankind.

What is The Matrix? The question is not yet fully answered. And it leads to another: Who created The Matrix? The answers lead to more worlds of bold possibility - and to a destiny that passes from revelations to Revolutions.

The Matrix Revolutions (2003)

In the powerful final chapter of the Matrix trilogy, Neo (Keanu Reeves) takes another step forward in the quest for truth that began with his journey into the real world at the outset of The Matrix - but that transformation has left him drained of his power, adrift in a no-man`s land between the Matrix and the Machine World. While Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) holds vigil over Neo`s comatose body, Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne) grapples with the revelation that the One in which he has invested a life`s worth of faith is merely another system of control invented by the architects of the Matrix. During the stunning conclusion, the rebel`s long quest for freedom culminates in an explosive battle. As the Machine Army wages devastation on Zion, its citizens mount an aggressive defense - but can they stave off the relentless swarm of Sentinels long enough for Neo to harness the full extent of his powers and end the war?

Marketing and Promotions Support

WHV will be supporting the release of HD-DVD release of the Matrix collections with national television spots on national cable such as Comedy Central, Spike, Uni HD, G4, and Sci-Fi; in national print publications such as Maxim, Wired, and EW, and on-line sites such as IGN, UGO, IMdB, iFilm, Amazon, Yahoo, Google, and AskMen. Addtionally, in-store merchandisers will be available for national retailers, leveraging other HD-DVD titles during the Father`s Day season.

With operations in 90 international territories, Warner Home Video, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company, commands the largest distribution infrastructure in the global video marketplace. Warner Home Video's film library is the largest of any studio, offering top quality new and vintage titles from the repertoires of Warner Bros. Pictures, Turner Entertainment, Castle Rock Entertainment, HBO Home Video and New Line Home Entertainment.
An eventual Bluray release would obviously be made up of five single sided 50gb discs.

As well as The Matrix , Amazon now have listings ( without release dates because studios like Dreamworks haven't started releasing yet ) for Titanic ( rights owned in U.S by both format supporting Paramount ) , Indiana Jones Trilogy , Gladiator and Saving Private Ryan laugh

For a format war that's supposedly over according to a Sony spokesman in Germany the other week its certainly keeping me interested .

I have been playing with my XE1 for more than a week now, and while the image is absolutely great (still waiting for more ordered titles to be delivered in order to make a better educated assesment) it is by no means jaw-dropping compared to good DVD SD transfers played on my DV79 via VP50. Diminishing returns. Definite step forward though, I wish there were more titles out there.

Although I have heard rumblings of Godfather and Pvt Ryan being released this year, such listings on Amazon are mere placeholders, no different to the placeholder they had for Lord of the Rings on HD DVD last summer (amongst other titles). They list these titles to gauge interest and to e-mail customers when they are officially announced. That's basically it.

There`s no real business sense in releasing Indiana Jones when the market is so small however, and the decision is ultimately not Paramount`s to make, it`s Lucasfilm`s. With a fourth film due in 2008, I couldn`t imagine the series arriving on an HD format until the end of next year.

Dreamworks, via Paramount, are in fact releasing their first title soon on both formats (Dreamgirls is their first release).

Well do remember Godfather and Indiana Jones would come from Paramount, who are format neutral like Dreamworks (since Paramount distribute their content after buying Dreamworks, though its catalogue isn't owned by either company anymore) so Gladiator, Pvt Ryan and so on will not be bound exclusively to any one format either. So great that HD DVD would get them, but better that Bluray would get them plus a whole lto more exclusive content from other studios? Time will tell.

To be more specific, if I get within 1.5 to 2m from the screen, the SD DVD image starts revealing its limitations, while at 2m the HD image is still very good.

Since I wouldn't want to move closer to the screen smile (even getting the PDP5000EX that's on my wish list now won't change that smile ...), the conclusion that comes to my mind is that at 3-3.5m viewing distance a larger screen would help make a better use of all that resolution.

This is where I have to change priorities and first start to think about upgrading my projector first.

Maybe one day they'll even get 'Batman Begins' working and out wink Some of the 'exclusive' content will appear elsewhere on Hd-DVD ( eg. The Prestige and The Island in U.K. ) I think the 'more studios onboard' card would be a bigger ace if people were starting to replace their existing collections but it doesn't seem to be the case. People are cherrypicking in both formats ; Batman Begins ,The Departed on HD and Casino royale and Xmen on BD.

Warner VP Nickerson recently reiterated support for BOTH formats and chose to politely disagree with the 'war is over' announcement .

Just browsing here :

there's more than enough to keep me busy in the released and upcoming releases section for a while

Exclusives or not, I agree the BDA need to sort that Profile 1.1 issue out in order to get certain Warner titles onto Bluray. The mandate to ensure all players ship with that compatibility has slipped from June to October now so the longer a neutral studio like Warner is left to unofficially favour HD DVD by releasing high profile titles like Batman, The Matrix, Harry Potter with their 'in movie experience' picture in picture features, the more chance there is of people dilly dallying between one format and the other, which only contributes to prolonging the life of both formats, which nobody should want.

Since some of Warner's bigger dual format releases are selling more on Bluray I would imagine the pressure is certainly heavy to get this sorted out. I would hope for a strong beta testing period between studios, their content, and manufacturers to ensure what I imagine will end up to be 3rd gen hardware is fully compliant with titles they'd like to get out in November and December.

Absolutely, but that's not as big a thing as the HD DVD camp tries to make out. The majority of huge movies, particularly the big franchises, are still typically bound to the one distributor in all territories. It's not like Pixar films are handled by someone else overseas…etc. You have to also factor in how aware the general public is of the importing scene, and the reality is they're not very aware at all, plus the cost of importing software will likely render them uninterested.

I think it comes down to favourites really. Who has the movies you want? My personal answer is that they all do which is why the whole dual format mess annoys me so much, and I think "they all do" is probably a common answer for most people which is what will ultimately frustrate and confuse everyone because one format might have The Sting, and the other might have Lawrence of Arabia (or for want of more mainstream comparisons, one might have King Kong, the other Pirates of the Caribbean).

Quote

Sure, though it's worth pointing out Departed sold about 20,000 more copies on Bluray in first week sales to compared to the HD DVD. You've got to admit things like that, plus over 100,000 copies of Casino Royale sold is likely to get the attention of studios on both sides of the fence. Whether Bluray can maintain and exceed numbers like that is the big question though. 22nd of May is a bit of a format franchise face off with The Matrix hitting HD DVD, and Pirates fo the Caribbean 1 & 2 hitting Bluray. I'd be very interested to see the sales figures for those releases.

I've said for a long time though that cheap HD DVD hardware, plus a "large enough" catalogue is still enough to potentially make the format take the long term lead since most people probably aren't even aware of studio allegiances and a lot of people bought into DVD when it only had three studios supporting it. The majority just assume the content they love will arrive eventually, so Bluray's big priority is to create a greater sense of public awareness of they content they offer over its competitor because if the consumer is made aware, I'd think they might contemplate their decision a bit more. Since there's a bias of big summer films this year toward Bluray exclusivity, we might see this come Christmas.

Everything is really bound in "wait and see" really... hence my personal frustration in my decision to keep on waiting. smile Of course, without any of you bold enough to buy into one of these formats, or both, we'd be getting nowhere, so that's a great thing.

Great post , Daniel.
As a movie fan , I just the movies I want , I never wanted to be forced to choose or , like yourself , wait it out . Its depressing to think that both formats very existance could delay overall HD take up frown . From a technical point of view ( BDi apart at the moment) , SQ+PQ can be as good as each other . It really is a sin that agreement couldn't have been reached before launch.

I feel that its a very big year for Blu. To be declaring an end to a war while the likes of 'The Matrix' are available to the opposition , seems , to an interested party , to be living in denial or at the very least poor PR.

Between the dislike for Hd-DVD/DVD combos ( one reason 'The Departed' Bluray sold so much it was cheaper and didnt have a compulsory but not neccessary DVD layer ) , and the apparent dismay at Warner's THD concept and the never-ending delays with BD and BS spoken by BD reps the whole thing is a mess.

Like DVD-A and Sacd , regretfully, I think both formats will coexist for some time yet.Maybe the day will come soon when we can just download and burn our own discs and leave this silly industry to its own nonsense politics and indecisiveness.

Cheers !
