I like the points both of you made because both are valid. I personally can enjoy a movie on an iPod- even when its panned & scanned. I would never allow this to be used for my home theater viewing though- that would greatly offend my sensibilities. My original point though is if you own content and you want to see where you can best sell it, will it be the place that sells maybe 60-100,000 titles a year or in excess of 1.5m. Its more complex than that of course because of the deals with Apple and the traditional distributors, but as we have seen usually the mass market wins out and we are beginning to get the hard data on where the "mass" of the mass market is. Now imagine when these people play those itunes movies back via Apple TV. Will the majority of them be so offended by the relative lack of resolution vs. even DVD that they will get off their lazy butts to buy/rent/ otherwise grab the DVD? My speculation is no they wont. Fortunately we here have different sensibilities. best regards, Jerry

sense and sensibilities It's kind of funny; In a way I think I represent both markets - Maybe similar to what Jerry is describing. Sometimes I'm in the mood for a full-on art form and everything that goes with it; But other times, I don't want suspension-of-disbelief - just a little interesting entertainment that's easy to deal with. I think in the this day and age of more efficient economics of delivery, both are possible and the success is possible with a smaller market than before. Fun to watch and be a part of it... ken

Anyone know what the status is of "Ran". It's due for release in France by Studio-Canal (on Monday?) but apparently there are no English subtitles!!!!
Someone reported it as being released in the UK, but I think this may be an error.

The Tosh HDE1 got quite a favourable review in this months HiFi News who decribe the decision to purchase as 'no brainer'.
At this rate I may start to waiver - but I think I'd go for the EX1 though.

I believe it's already shipping in the UK (Dabs). But they are currently out of stock!

I notice that Blue Planet is being released soon, but I can't remember if that's in the UK or US (and whether or not it's a 24p or 25p release). What are the chances of our XA1s playing it if it's 25p?

What are the chances of our XA1s playing it if it's 25p? You mean Planet Earth, don't you? The US release from Warner/BBC is coming first. The UK version is coming at the end of the summer. The series was post produced in 25p to the best of my knowledge, so presumably there will be some framerate conversion for the US release. It was a mix of HD and 35mm, so they may just drop single frames if they want to makee it a 24p encode in the US. If they wanted to make it a 30p encode then more tinkering would be required. The UK version will be out by the time the E1/XE1 (A2/XA2) get the 25p firmware update (due in the spring I think), but whether the A1 and XA1 can ever get a similar update Toshiba have never said.
