Mark, Glad youre using them as intended! Wait until the Meridian Milky Bar Kid set comes out- special double rocking capability... In my case I am using a HDMI on one end and DVI on the other end cable. The 5000's DVI input is configured for PC specs so I have told the crystalio this- the resulting image is much punchier- where as before it was a little hazy. I tried 720P/48 (actually the number was something like 47.95hz) and the projector locked on to it, but from the increased judder, I think it was reassembling everything to the 60hz rate. But this projector is on its last legs with me. I know what you mean about the grey scale- I will have the new one ISF'ed - Yet I have seen the same thing on the plasma and on this projector so I think its the component video outputs of the toshiba and I just plugged in the panny Bluray player and I see a similar thing there too. More on that later, its too soon to give my thoughts on this. I will say that the resulting sound from the HD DVD converted to DTS @ 1.5mb/s is very very strong- it seems more lively than the same DVD soundtracks- but this is not a real a-b comparison and just my first impression. Time is at a premium for me this past week. That crystalio is a great processor, but its taking me a while to get into how it works- its a tweakers delight- no doubts. Finally, I declare HD DVD to be the winner in the format war because it has porn! And we all know that wherever porn goes, the formats go... http://www.ipodobserver.com/story/29914 best regards, Jerry

So guys, which (Toshiba) HDDVD player should I get? I see there are several models available now, but don't see much difference between them other then coaxial vs optical?

This may be true of the 1st hen players, but there are significant dofferences between the 2nd gen players. ie, EX1/AX2 vs E1/A2 - X models have a decent deinterlacer (to give 1080p/60 output, later rumoured to also be at p24) and scaler on board and multi channel analogue out.

Plasmatico - I believe the ones to go for are the XA2 in the US and XE2 in the UK.

It's the XE1 in europe? And it's recently been pulled from Amazon.co.uk - it previously stated a 31 Dec shipping date, but now shows "not in stock or discontinued". Anybody know what's happening with the XE1 in the UK?

I got my dealer to get in touch with Toshiba U.K. and the reply was " we have no official ship date as yet for XE1" which is very disappointing , particularly as the 2nd gen. players are already out stateside and in japan and U.K. shops and e-tailers are already selling the discs . ~M~
Mostly harmless. Comfortably numb.

VK, AFAIK there will be an announcement for a XE-2 in a month or so. Maybe even sooner.
