Hey guys-If this has been mentioned before I am sorry-BUT- I just hooked up my MF-1 with a 2:35 screen/IscoIII lens- When I run my 800 no problem- when I use my HD the whole pic. shifts down ( this happens on both HD and also SD thru the Toshiba)- My ISF guy thought that it was because the Meridan processor has not been upgraded to handle a anamorphic lens-Meridian did not have a time frame (exactly) for the firmware release- -I am running this in letterbox mode- If I switch to anamorphic then I get the black bars on top and bottom-Same thing when I run Bluray just not as dramatic- any thoughts??thanks so much-

Robert Zohn from Value Electronics over at AVS, who is a super reliable fellow has spilled the beans on a THIRD player from Toshiba:

TOSHIBA HD-A20

“Here's a heads-up that tomorrow Toshiba will be showing their third new second generation HD DVD player, the HD-A20.

The A20 will output resolutions up to 1080p at 24 or 60 fps, like the XA2.

No 5.1 analog output and lower priced than the XA2, Toshiba has rounded off their G2 models with a good, better, best selection.

I don't expect Silicon Optix's Reon processor for the A20. MAP is $599.99. More details to come tomorrow when the CES show opens.

-Robert”

That`s rather odd spec and price wise, sitting itself firmly in between the A2 and XA2…. Is the A2 about to drop in price to compliment this third player?

In other news, LG's dual format player is now listed at Best Buy's website for $1199.

Cool Daniel. Thanks- I agree with your assessment.

Bebop- it seems to me you are at the mercy of when the firmware update comes out or you will have to get a different video processor involved such as Lumagen or Crystalio.

best regards,
Jerry

I must have slept thru this announcement for HDMI 1.3a in November frown

http://www.audioholics.com/techtips/audioprinciples/interconnects/HDMI13.php

The sooner they stabilise these new technologies the better. I wonder do the latest Hd-DVD and Bluray players players include this latest 'advance'

Someone correct me if wrong -
I think the present 1.3 version released in the PS3 and new players now at CES include these 1.3a features. At least the ones listed in that article....

Worrying when only one of the titles mentioned is an HD DVD exclusive (Battlestar Galactica). They need to announce a lot more over the coming days or Bluray will steal all the attention with announcements of major exclusive content.

My UK copies of King Kong and Serenity have just arrived. Well they have "Sold and distributed in the E.U. by Universal Pictures (UK)" on the packaging, so I assume they are the UK transfers...

But I was rather surprised at something that maybe I shouldn't have been: the standard definition extras are in 480i/p. Interesting.

Kong is the same mastering encode as the US version, but on the EU disc they removed most (all?) of the U-Control features for whatever reason.. Not a huge loss as the US one in its own right is fairly sparse extras wise failing to port even everything from the two-disc DVD which was cheeky of Universal. In true Peter Jackson fashion, with a longer cut of the film on a four-disc DVD release with around one million hours of extras* the ape is bound for an HD re-issue at some point.

*might be an exaggeration.

There are a growing number with 1080i/p supplements too. Paramount are quite big on that, and Warner increasingly so (deleted scenes on Superman Returns are 1080p, some stuff on Harry Potter is HD as well). Weinstein Co discs have a lot of HD supplements too.

Chaps. Would anyone be interested in maintaining a HD disc "database" on the wiki? i.e. Which are the best discs (US/UK/HDDVD/BD/etc.)?

Thanks for those Mark. There do appear to be a couple of European and Japanese imports in there too.
