I have a hard time doing any side-by-side comparisons between DVD and HDDVD because when I swithc away from the A1 it stops due to 'no HDMI link' - annoying!

Simon - the HDMI handshake *is* annoying. I have to turn my video processor on before the player so that the processor can handshake with the player and tell it "I am here" otherwise the player always displays NO HDMI. This means my carefully constructed automated system is not quite so automated as it used to be.
Jerry, Full Metal Jacket is one of the titles which was messed up during the transfer so don't expect reference quality from this one.

This was mentioned in the press last autumn but I think casually dismissed as a pipe dream, but Warner have invented the 'Total HD' disc, designed for playback on both formats and to be showcased at CES..... Oh my. The mind boggles what the cost and yields might be like for such a thing. http://news.com.com/New+disc+may+sway+DVD+wars/2100-1041_3-6147053.html In other pre-CES news, LG have confirmed they will have a dual format player at the show.

Mark - this is OT, but am I right in thinking you currently use a Luma ProHDP? If so, how do you connect up all of your sources?

Yup, using the ProHD but will be beta testing their new RadianceXG as soon as it's available.
Connections are as follows:
Meridian 800 - SDI Tosh HD-DVD - HDMI->DVI (YCbCr 4:2:2 setting) Sony Blu-Ray - HDMI->DVI (YCbCr 4:2:2 setting) D-Theater DVHS - component analog
The Lumagen doesn't handle video deinterlacing very well for those who might be interested in it, but for film it is perfect. The RadianceXG should solve the video handling aspects.

Ah that explains it. You only have two HDMI sources and no SkyHD...

In other pre-CES news, LG have confirmed they will have a dual format player at the show. Yes, dual format players sounds much better than dual format disks...

I suppose Sky movies are speeded up (and you've probably got the discs anyway ).

It's the artefacts I don't like - when you blow Sky up onto a large screen it's appaling... so I only use disc/tape sources in the cinema, not off the air...

Yep- you should see direct tv- same thing. I do have mine plugged in but I rarely watch them. It might be fun to watch a HD hockey game stretched to 2.35:1 Mark- thanks for the info. Its funny, I was just thinking about this today. I have an order in for one of the new runco cinewide projectors and I was just thinking through the whole 24 fps thing. I will be on a call with Runco today to discuss my new projector. I would like it to do 48hz and I have to find out from them if their new video processor does this or not- I suspect not but maybe I am wrong. The projector specs say it can do (I think) 25hz-150hz. So 48 shouldnt be a problem. But what about the video processing? I have to find out. There is their stand alone processor and then the projector even has some processing in it if fed a 1080i signal. I will find out from them if I input a 1080p signal into their processor via HDMI, I know this bypasses most if not all of thier processing, but what about the stretch for their anamorphic lens. I know lumagen supports anamorphic lens so maybe this would still be OK. Should be an interesting call. Btw- sometimes when I think about this stuff my head starts to spin! lol. PS- so does anyone want a copy of full metal jacket? Just let me know I dont like having two for no good reason save my own forgetfulness. PS #2- what do you guys think of the Crystalio? http://www.crystalio.com/features.html Seems to be a lot more expensive than the Lumagen - what does it do to justify the increase? best regards, Jerry
