Please try to keep it in context of Meridian-Audio. Example topics: Why you picked a player. How you tested. What you think of the player. Questions on best hook up to Meridian system. Comparing it's Audio and DVD performance to Meridian players. Great Video or Sound tracks. Example BAD topics. Why Blu-Ray is so bad. Cool game releases. http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/forumdisplay.php?f=148

I am curious to see where this goes. I will continue the Hulk HD DVD discussion- I got it because I like eye candy and the disc is eye candy...
Mark, you have ruined- ruined- me.

Yes- I saw that. But apparently you need to have a key which the player provides and the people doing the cracking have not provided this key. I don't really understand encryption beyond the fact that there is a key that allows something encrypted to be decrypted. And I don't care to know that much so long as my movies play. I am going to say what we probably all know and even the IP companies privately admit. You can't beat the pirates. We are in an age where information has become an "efficient market" and that means the best schemes are not safe if the marketplace decides to put its resources behind breaking something. I have always advocated the best way to eliminate piracy is to get the movies/ music out as fast as possible at a price that is very fair. When music CDs were priced at $15-18 each and DVD movies were about $20 each it did not seem fair that a 45 minute 2 channel audio only product would cost nearly the same as a 2+ hour, top level (for the time) video product offering 5.1 channels of audio and documentaries and often 2 discs in the package. You want the reason for the record companies downfall- its not piracy alone- its a combination including lackluster product that they are pushing (there is a lot of good new music if you look for it) and improperly priced product. Prices are now like $12/ disc and I think it should be even less. Thats just me. Frankly as an audiophile- given the recording quality of current discs maybe they should be priced even further down! It would be great to pay based on recording quality- that'll never happen. Anyway, look- these formats should be smart and allow for managed copies- this will satisfy 99% of us. I know that other format we can't say here can allow for it- I am not sure on HD DVD. This should have been one of the first features of these formats to keep the casual copiers away. JMHO. best regards, Jerry

I agree about 'Hulk', I've always liked Ang Lee's other films and I thought this very faithful to the 'comic' spirit of the original , plus eye candy ,plus , Jennifer Connelly Not surprised about AACS either. Has there ever been an 'uncrackable' copy protection created ? When will these people learn ? http://www.avforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=446870 Happy New Year to all ! ~M~

I suppose the most fitting way to summarise the week's AACS issue is to say that it has not been cracked so much as it has been compromised and even then it might actually be incorrect, since it seems to me (if indeed the claimed hack is true) that PowerDVD is mostly at fault here for not appropriately encrypting the keys it needs to playback the titles in the computer memory. I could be wrong, but that's what I took from reading about the situation, but naturally various forums seem to be blowing this out of proportion a little bit. That's not to say that it isn't potentially a big deal for titles currently on the market on either format, but I'm failing to see a "sky is falling' scenario here. Anyway, look- these formats should be smart and allow for managed copies- this will satisfy 99% of us. I know that other format we can't say here can allow for it- I am not sure on HD DVD. Managed Copy was introduced for HD DVD well before Bluray agreed to adopt it. A while after Microsoft were told where to stick their request the then exclusive Bluray backer Hewlett Packard turned to the BD group and requested MMC and adoption of the HDi interactive system that Microsoft and Disney created (as used in HD DVD for all menus…etc…etc vs Bluray's Java solution). Bluray's people agreed to add the former, but not the latter, and consequently HP ran into the arms of HD DVD and became a format neutral company. Quite what the hell has happened to MMC I don't know (is it actually mandatory anymore?). It's all gone frustratingly quiet. I suppose there might be a chance we'll hear about it at CES, and in light of the reports of the AACS issue those responsible for implementing Managed Copy might be spurred into getting a move on in introducing a legitimate way to store the films on media servers. It may well be on going issues in straightening out the relationship between AACS and MMC that is delaying it in the first place.

My gut feeling is that the people at the studios just don't get it about managed copies. Its just my gut feeling.
