The improvement of HD over SD is not in dispute.
If there wasn't a format war, this debate simply would not be taking place and I would already own an HD player...

Subjective Impression is ALL that counts in the real world of Joe SIxpack. Well that and cool looking logo badges.lol Cheers, Chris P.S. I Agree Virus, without the format war this would be a dull message board, what would we discuss? lol. Mark, Technicaly you are right, there is no dispute on your facts, but for Joe Sixpack and others, SD is Good Enough, Sorry I am still researching Edible hats though!!!
No 18 in the Hall of fame I have simple tastes; I am content to settle for the best: GIK monster bass panels, rear wall. QNAP TVS 471i3. Roon into DSP5200SE via 210/ 218 zone... Explorer 2. Bluesound Pulse 2, Mini & Flex. 596v1, 518, Foxsat HD, Sony BDP, Pioneer 5090, 2 Chromecast's for LRB videos. MS200 to F80 for a Roon zone

I agree with Ians points. Maybe some year we can arrange a Hitchhikers meeting at at CES or CEDIA or other show.
As a slight aside, I can clearly see the differences, but I am not going to support another format that goes no where- and I submit to you all again that the format war is only 30% or so to blame for the problems. Would DVD-A have succeeded if it had the full music catalog and no format war? I think no. I think people are happy with what they have and are not wanting to buy the music again. And in the case of music, many people actually didnt bother to rip CDs they own (hard as it is for we here to believe it) and they instead bought the music again from itunes. Now why would they buy it a third time. We are at the dawn of the itunes movie service and people will probably support that more than these new disc formats as they produce a real consumer benefit. And wouldn't it be sad if the format is not HD, which is most certainly will not be at first, and its entirely possible that it will not even be up to DVD quality... does anyone know how which format they are using now? H.264 is it DVD resolution?
best regards, Jerry

I'm pretty much where Chris, Ian, Jerry are on this (Ian articulated this quite well I thought). In fact, Whenever I want perfect HD, I just go outside...
With an upscaler for my 120" wide 2.35 screen, SD produces a 'good enough' to take me into the story;
Although, to Ron's point, if the an HD format stabilizes I will choose to buy favorites in HD no question. In fact I actually just bought a music Blu-ray disk (Tony Bennett) and I can't even play on anything - I anticipate picking up a PS3 sometime next year to enjoy what I can and who knows, maybe a game or 2 will intrigue.
I think many will choose to buy HD if given an easy choice, but the desire for it, won't drive us to a new format (and certainly not thru a war).
I've repurchased several of my DVDs on Itunes, just to easily have them accessible on the laptop for travel; Jerry in answer to your question - these are in mpeg4/H.264 at just under DVD resolution at 640 x 480.
Chris - you're on for lunch!

I'm going to start lobbying local cinemas and ask them to broadcast DVD quality on their screens. Should be good enough, right? Mark

Mark, Sadly, around here at least, DVD audio and video done by a good HT install is far superior to 90% of the theaters. I have actually been ruined by my install. I much prefer it in terms of the immersive experience. There is more observable detail, a clearer picture, and the sound, well lets say Meridian has ruined me for life. Still, I go to the theater when the social occasion calls for it. Don't get me or I think Ken or the rest of us wrong. We would love a viable HD format, but we are saying we are happy with what we have and we think the marketplace will be also. Anyone wanna buy a MiniDisc player? (I do actually have one if anyone wants to pay for its shipping it could be yours) I've supported these fringe formats too many times now. best regards, Jerry

Mark - at the same time, I applaud your efforts ; If the format can manage migration to a better picture for the same cost, we'll all benefit; and us 'SD good enough' boys will gladly give you credit for making it happen... Would be great if one of the formats make it, just to provide some prestine audio options, replacing the DVD-A/SACD... ken

Problem is that if people don't support the new formats then they are of course going to fail and in a year's time you'll all be happily congratulating yourself for your smart move and missing the point that it was your refusal to support the format that killed it :|
So, I am prepared to put my money where my mouth is here - the first three people to put a Toshiba HD-XA1 into their Amazon.com wishlist and reply here with their wishlist URL get a shiny new HD-DVD player for their troubles. Put an HD-DVD into the wishlist and I'll chuck that in to. All I ask is that if you honestly have no interest in HD (or already have an HD player) then don't take somebody elses chance. And that once the player arrives give an honest evaluation of the image and sound quality back here.
Cheers,
Mark
PS I am assuming their won't be an issue with a gift transaction in the US but if there is we'll find a solution.
