Dude, your a freak! I will probably just get two, but if you are getting four, I will get eight! LOL. What are your thoughts on top mounting, so I can have a lower base, vs. mounting under a base. I will probably get two of them shortly.
Stacey, I just read this. I've been so flustered between (yet another) huge 2 day liscensing examination coming up next week and all of the terrible terrorism in the news. It is hard to pull away from the news. We went to a funeral today for one of our friends who was part of the filght crew that crashed over Pittsburgh secondary to the struggle on board. I only wish they could have broken their skinny little pathetic terrorist necks before they gained control. Sorry, back on topic.
Anyway, there is no difference to surface mounting other than aesthetics. If you look at my platform (Have you seen the constuction pictures of my platform?), you can just mount them to the plywood, which should be screwed (piloted and screwd every 4-6 inches) to the frame of 2 by 4's and outer frame which was 2 x 8's. You want some degree of flexibility. Resist the urge of making it too rigid. I am 100% satisifed with how my platform turned out, although now I wish I made it a couple inches higher (12 inches) because I'm getting 3 really cool chaises to provide new seating. These unique chaises lie a little lower than the cheesy 'day bed' I used as seating. (You gotta see these very unique, very comfortable, 40 inch wide chaises. 3 will be placed side by side).
Hey, you shouldn't make fun of me getting four Buttkicker 2's

It really is nice to have headroom in these devices, just as subwoofers. 8 are not necessary for my platform

But no question more than 4 could benefit a large room or two such platforms 4 is actually ideal IMO for a single platform (deifintely a luxury indeed).
Anyway, placing them on the surface is just fine, if you don't mind seeing them. I actually needed to a 10-12 inch platform anyway for optimal viewing, so it worked out great putting them underneath. I plan on taking all new pictures in early November because of the many changes taking place in my HT.
I also saw you comment on height channels. This would currently not be possible in my situation because I do not have enough room above the screen. I am interested in exploring height channels in the future, but it won't be anything I'd rush into.
I'd really appreciate your comments on Hollywood coming out with some new future format which would include a discrete tactile
channel with all of the benefits it would bring. Currently, there is a limit to what Meridian could do because this is not so much a Meridian or processor level support, but something new from Hollywood which processor manufacturers would have to support. A single discrete 0-600 Hz channel requires very little bandwidth and should be no problem to implement. Again, it appears that progress is being made in that direction.
Certainly, processor manufacturers could help the cause by providing an extra output which could be further tweaked. For instance, many people here want to be able to set more than one crossover point for diferent subwoofers. This could be used to benefit a tactile transducer--being able to control the gain, distance, and crossover setting independently from the subwoofers.
Of course, only a discrete tactile tranducer channel from Hollywood wouldever bring tactile transduction to its true potential. We are so far from that now, it is no wonder that people judge tactile transduction based on what is available and not what its capabilities could be with a discrete tactile channel.
In the meantime, it would be nice if Meridian addressed the tactile transducer issue and helped clear the path to make tactile transducers audiophile caliber. I believe that the new Buttkicker 2 and the Clark Synthesis units are very high quality
devices which if utilized and installed properly, will add an entire new dimension to the experience. They can be customized to anyone's liking for personal taste. Ultimately, we will require a discrete channel from Hollywood.
