It's part of the SPDIF data stream, and if you want to call it "auto-sensing" you can. How specific do you want to get?

The trouble is that I don't believe there is a way to set digital gain on a per-source basis where you know that the source is not coming out at 0dBFS. This is particularly true of satellite boxes where, for instance, you might want to set up separate phantom sources for listening to TV or radio stations with slightly different gains.
You don't want every source coming out at 0dBFS all the time. That would be quite loud constantly. Of course then, you wouldn't need to worry about having M kit, any old hifi would do.

Using phantoms for multipe TV and radio stations becomes problematic fairly quickly as well due to the limited number of definable inputs.

So perhaps a G18 is not needed; just the ability to boost the per-source gain of all inputs?
If it's an analog source, then you can set the sensitivity, but you have to be careful with that or you could end up going into an overload situation.

You do understand that in the software world 1.3 and 1.35 are different releases, right?

I was being a little tongue-in-cheek as well as a little exasperated.

G68 v1.3 should have resolved the multi-room functionality issues.
Which is a little at odds with the release notes for v1.35:
Quote
Lots of changes to allow zone source selection and volume control from the G68

Internal tuner ... Can now be controlled via Meridian Comms from zones...

Zones. Selecting an analogue input for the zones from power-up fixed. Zones have the correct volume from power up and are able to select sources before the main room has been taken out of standby. Fixed unreliable MHR decryption for zone inputs. Video outputs continue to work when main room is in standby.
I don't exactly see how v1.3 could have been regarded as having "fixed" the multi-room issues. wink

Or is this the difference between functionality being "broken" and "implemented"?

What does M consider to be the best media player solution out there? Is M still considering the introduction of a media player?
I`m with him on the 518/G68 question (and a few others, ... more if I understood them all!).

Not really understanding all of the technicalities, please could someone explain (preferably in idiot terms) how the G68 does the same as the 518 (excluding the music shaping) with regards to increasing digital gain and 16-bit to 24-bit conversion? - Is it to do with?:

“The G68`s ‘Smart Source` feature continually monitors the digital inputs and automatically loads the correct decoding software for the format, speaker layout and encoding of the incoming signal. This capability is enhanced by MHR SmartLink, which provides a digital link between a Meridian optical disc player and processor, carrying explicit information about the nature of the data stream as well as encrypted high-resolution digital signals from DVD-Audio - the first system of its kind to be approved.”

John - Thanks for all of the work that has gone into this post.

Joel - Thanks for keeping this post interesting

Tom

Or Bob meant to say that 1.35 would fix the issues. I can only take Bob at his literal word which is what I have to go by.

I won't claim to be part of Bob's inner circle or even a close personal friend, but I've also never known him to intentionally mislead anyone here.

Yes, he keeps things from the forum that are necessary to do so for the business. Who wouldn't do so if they were in his shoes?

The 518 isn't exclusively a mastering product, and noise shaping doesn't just apply to the mastering role of the 518. The 518 is a consumer product too. So I find the conclusion that noise shaping is inappropriate to G-series products a bit dubious.

Just a thought on 2 channel MRC. John has already shown that adding it to existing products would be very expensive, it's probably true that reducing the G68 down to 2 channel is also wasteful. FIR filters are miles more efficient when they are multi-channel. There's a good chance that a 2ch MRC implementation wouldn't cost a lot less. Of course if they were doing that in FPGA instead of a DSP, they'd get tonnes of filters and wouldn't need four chips! :-)

On the 518 - I was one of those concerned about bit-depth, and the answer that they're picking it up from the SPDIF stream is the best possible answer. Now your 24 bit wavs from your media server shouldn't get reduced down to a dithered 16 bit just because you had to set your source as such. John - how sure are you about this?

Personally, I appreciate Bob's candour in answering most of the questions. There aren't many technology companies that will give away as much as that. I'm really pleased that the G68 is h/w capable of >6ch, but a little worried about how far the statement of in-player decoding for HD formats goes.

Either way I think we're being given a valuable amount of insight. Do Lexicon do the same thing for their customers? (genuine question) There are a lot of us here who work for techy companies. How many of them would release roadmaps or architectural details in a public forum?

Thanks to Bob, John and all the posters!

I've read the specs for the SPDIF bitstream and its contents; it's publically available information. By spec, SPDIF was originally defined out as a 20-bit carrier and bits 4-7 (auxiliary data) are used to get to 24-bits when it's 24-bit data.
