Simon,
I think John means he has swapped the posts so that all related posts are grouped...

Many thanks for doing this. Joel Done.

Did the Q&A get posted and I just missed it (not trying to be a nudge, just interested)?

JK is waiting for the OK from Meridian that his draft responses are an accurate summary of his conversations with M. The Q (&A when posted) will be in post #2 of this thread.

As an FYI, I did get an answer back but for reasons unknown, the attachment was unreadable Not forgotten, just problematic and the problem is likely with my mail server. Best,

Please note that post 2 has now been updated with answers.
There was a slight delay due to an issue with a returned attachment being unreadable.

Many thanks for this John. Overall, I think M's policy on the new formats/HDMI makes sense and I'm not particularly worried by it. Interesting insight into why they are using Faroudja (programmable FPGAs with custom algorithms). I'd love to see how M's deinterlacing solution stacks up to, say, the latest algorithms from Anchor Bay (ABT) as found in the DVDO VP20/30/50 - these appear to be the benchmark for cadence detection and edge processing at the moment (if anyone had forgotten, the G9x and 800 deinterlace video too). However, I must admit that I am rather amazed at some of the answers and must question the extent of their market research beyond the installer market. Am I truly deluded in thinking that the views on this forum are not representative of the non-installer customer base? - No 480i/576i output on G9x/800v4 precludes an external deinterlacing solution (and means I won't upgrade my 598).
- No tuner card for 8xx series is a kick in the teeth for 8xx series owners.
- Stereo product with MRC "not even considered" is astonishing, given a pair of DSP speakers and CD player constitute "a complete Meridian stereo system".
- No plans for a G62? The 562V3 only has a 16-bit ADC and looks really nice next to a silver G08. Not.
- The whole point of the 518 "functionality" question is to allow users to have digital gain control for non-Meridian analogue and digital sources. I don't see that this is possible. Looks like we'll need to keep our 518s.
Of course, I'm taking a lot of M's answers with a pinch of salt. It wouldn't surprise me to see a reversal of some of these answers. I'm not going to rely on that happening soon though. One final opinion: Enthusiasts keep a brand alive. M needs to document the finer points of what its kit does rather than keep us guessing. Then, maybe we wouldn't be asking all these questions all of the time...

Given Bob Stuart's recent Stereophile interview on the purity of a dedicated CD player over that of a similar hybrid CD/DVD player - such as the 808 - I find it very bizarre and disingenuous that Meridian still insist that a G91A could be as good as a G62/G08 combination.
I fully appreciate Meridian's reasoning for not introducing new-format disc spinners until the format 'war' dies-down - but until then Meridian should concentrate on advancing the cause of 2-channel devices. Bob's own admission is that CD's provide a common denominator for music sales (ignoring downloaded music).
Bob's comments do nothing to motivate me to buy a G91A. I'm with Bob in wanting a superior 2-channel CD only system - but I don't have 808i money. The DVD, video and surround capabilities of the G91A would be wasted on me. I would be paying heavily over the odds for features I just wouldn't use.
That's why I want a G62 and G08. Until then I won't be 'upgrading' my present system. That's lost future income for Meridian from unmet customer demand.

I have seen the responses of Meridian on HH CEDIA 2006 on this thread. I am quite suprised and dissapointed with the the response and reasoning to the question on the "stereo product with MRC for stereo systems".
My concern is that if we all know that the room (shape, contents, etc.) affects the accoustic of the system and therefore it was the reason to include the MRC on some processors (mainly dedicated to sorround processing -SSP) why Bob Stuart and team are "surprised at the reuqest to have MRC on a stereo system"?
To be honest, sometime is not if we customers are asking something, but if we know that a certain functionality is good for a better sound and then we should have such functionality?. At the end of the day there is not doubt that MRC is really, really good and stunnig on the improving of the experience of sound/livenesss on our homes.
It is not strange that if you pay 4.5K for a single unit of SSP you get MRC but if you pay 4.2K for a separate system of G02 controller /G08 player you do not have it, is it?!.
Sometimes you must pull the demand for you products (rather wait the customers asks for your product) just to make sure your brand is on the market as a "higly innovative and technologically advanced"
By the way, I wrote and asked 6 months ago to Meridian Technical support to get MRC on my G02 for a still better high quality stereo sound experience. They answer me "you have to get G68/861v4". Unfortunately I have invested in another products in the same brand and I will not be able or willing (more correctly) to get all the functionalities of those devices for a stereo system!!.
Regards
Jose
