Question still open... Are the G68 and 861v4 capable of decoding and upsampling multichannel DD and DTS 5.1 bitstreams?

No - the extra horsepower in these machines are used for other things - like MRC.

Thanks Ian.

What should the display say if upsampling is taking place?

So the best option is to decode in the 59x or 800 and let the processor to the upsampling?

Thanks Nick. I'll check tonight.

However, I think I may have found another G68/Mconfig bug though as, when I tried the other night, the HS parameter wasn't available when the input was 48kHz multichannel MHR. (My system is now 96/24 DSP + analogue).

Marcoro - yes, that would seem to be the correct thing to do.

I have got my G98/G68/Active Analogue Speakers system set up to decode in player and then upsample in the processor so that all internal stuff is done at the highesr rates possible before being output as balanced analogue. This seems to work OK.

VK:

Only if you decode in a Meridian player (G91/G98/800/598).

Keep in mind that you have a single 56367 doing the DD/DTS decode if you leave it to the receiver card, not an ASIC which is what everyone else is using.

The 596 won't work, as it outputs a bitstream and as such the digital receiver would be used for decoding DD/DTS.

Thanks John. Of course, you can upsample two channel PCM from a 596...

As far as I remember reading, the 598 decodes DD and DTS and converts it to multichannel PCM 24 bit. The 568.2mm via smartlink only then takes each channel and upsamples it from 48k to 96k. 2 channel PCM input only via SPDIF is also upsampled in all channels in the 568.2. DD and DTS via SPDIF is not converted to 24bit, 96k in the 568.2. I find the difference quite noticable. Upsampled movie sound is noticably better. More dynamic, smoother and more natural sounding. More depth of image. Especially DTS upsampled. WOW!.
You tease, you. I wish to be woken when pigs start flying and we can enjoy such delights on a 568.2 with the new next-gen codecs thanks to a magical HDMI to MHR box of tricks that Meridian are bound to never invent.
