Sandeep; I completely agree with you. My scenario is IDENTICAL to yours. The DSP 5200's should NOT let any signal through that could damage it.

I have a big issue in a bigger room with DSP6000's. I am now convinced that unless one has a perfectly sized and treated room, that any speaker 6000 and below (have not tried 7000 or 8), cannot be played at anything higher than 82 for any sustained timeframe.
This is a shame, because many of us like music at 90-95.
By the way---after my thread yielded numerous references to getting my hearing checked---I did---and it is completely normal.

I am getting the impression that you might be right Dave. If this occurs again, I am switching back to analog components that can handle proper volumes.

I'm still curious about what dbs you do get when have a good loud session. I've quoted here before that the Foo's CD clocks 110+ at 85 on the M scale. That surprised me and have to say I don't do it much now as a result. This would only be possible if the listener calibrated at 7+dB above reference levels. 87 on the Meridian scale equates to 105dB for 0dB fs (a full scale digital signal) You are talking about 7dB above that (5 for the 105-110dB difference, plus for the 85-87 difference). This is the beauty of having a reference std. You are calibrating a tone of known level to a known SPL. Therefore, you know what the other levels will be as well. Regards,

The driving force behind the DSP8000s was large American living rooms which couldn't be filled adequately with anything else in the range.

JK, It may not have been 110 but is was definitely 100+. I'll have to find the original post I put it in. Just for you I'll re-do it this weekend . Edit http://www.meridianunplugged.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=6;t=001468 It was 100 @ 75 @ 3.5m

Nick: That seems quite loud. Ok, assuming we're calibrated at reference levels... Assuming the same signal hits N loudspeakers, here's what a setting of 75 would get you for an SPL at 0dB FS (the highest possible signal): 1 == 93 2 == 96 3 == 97 4 == 99 5 == < 100 If not running 5 channel stereo, this system is calibrated hot Cheers,

I posted a response, but it didn't register. I put on a loud CD and at 88 it was 102 db. I also calibrated the system based on the rears holding the system down. I had both rears at 0.0 (max) and yet the fronts were -3.5. The decible read was 72db. Maybe the system is too low so I am over driving it?

JK,
I appreciate the theory. I'll re-do it and post back all the stats for MRC, calib levels, dbs and M speedo. I'll check the tracks for levels also via EAC.
cheers

Nick,
It isn't theory. Your calibration takes into account room gain.
Cheers,

OK.....the kids are out...I'm "working" from home today, doors and windows firmly closed (don't want an ASBO), so.....
Foo Fighters - In Your Honour (title track/#1) SB3/G68/DSP8k Direct preset i.e. 2-ch only Listening distance =3.5m L/R DSP both calib @ -1.0 and +ve MRC @ 376 with 18 filters
Meridian Volume..........dB SPL C/fast
75.......................94 80.......................99 85.......................105 90.......................109 (and this is sounds fantastic but totally OTT...I daren't go any further)
What is and isn't a theory is an interesting thought though. AFAIK "theories can incorporate facts and laws and tested hypotheses"; "true in fact and theory"
The above data are the tested hypothesis.
What do you think ?

Nick & John, I posted the db reading for calibration and playback. Can either of you, or anyone see a problem with the way it is playing back. Volume setting vs. db level.
