South Africa in 2010,

South Africa in 2010........the USA.........I don't think so !!....regards, Ian.

Oh by the way, GO ENGLAND

George,
Nothing is really happening on this thread, we just appear to be going round in circles with no conclusion. At the end of the day Djones cannot do or try anything at the moment due to a lack of equipment, maybe a new topic should be started when all is returned.

Regards,
Ian

Hi Nick,

Looks like that monitor would give you some good info. I only used voltage monitoring and here in the states we use 120VAC. So the current demands are higher. Keep in mind it monitors RMS current/voltage not peak. Although with a 15amp circuit here in the states I see dips of up to three volts RMS with a 200 watt per channel amp. The wiring was only 6 feet from the electrical box. The transformer in the power conditioner bothers me. I would use one conditioner for each speaker. I'm not sure about the D6000 design either. Is there a separate power supply for each amp or is it one transformer? The more transformers you parallel together the lower the impedance and then we don't know about the power conditioner impedance that is most likely higher than the transformer on the pole outside. Its all speculation. I just think Dave should try directly into the wall to prove it out.

Ron

I thought I was the only one using a Z-sys RDP-1 with my meridians , but I see I have company:)
I love the unit and would never part with it - I "reviewed" it yonks ago in conjunction with DSP 5500 speakers

Hello Everyone:

I never did try connecting the speakers directly to the wall sockets. I only connected through a regular extension cord with 4 sockets, then through the Monster 3500, then through the Furman IT Ref 15.

Unfortunately, since I do not have one of the D6000s, or the boards for my dSP6000c, I cannot test them by going directly to the wall.

My electrical panel is in my basement almost directly under the room in question. The length of the wiring to the wall socket is estimated at 10-20 feet at most.

After reading all the great feedback and ideas on this thread, I wish I had kept the speakers home to experiment. I would now like to take them to a friends home, place them in a smaller room, connect them directly to the wall and see what they do.

If they do the same thing, this would eliminate the conditioner, room size and openness, and electrical issues---thereby reducing the issue to hardware of some kind.

When the Meridian Area Sales Manager came to my home, he did happen to be in the Chicago area. The 2 techs worked with the local dealer.

I will phone the tech in Atlanta on Monday and see if he thinks sending down both D6000s (everything) is the best avenue. Ha may not know the answer until he looks at what he has or is still to receive. It has been two weeks since the Dealer and company have left my home, and I have heard Zero from anyone except the Atlanta tech sending me the shipping box for my DSP6000c boards like he promised.

So, unfortunately, at this rate, it may take 1-4 months to find out what is going on?? Now again, I go back to my commentary on customer service?? I am not asking for anything free, and am quite willing to pay a premium to get to the bottom of this issue.

Ncpl---thanks for the names at Meridian UK---this will come in handy if Atlanta sends me there.

You should be able todo some tests with the one working speaker you have.

Actually, I should have said RDQ-1 -- all the same EQ functions, but only one AES/EBU and one SPDIF input, more limited gain control, and no remote, none of which are any real issue when used with my G68. On the upside, much, much less expensive than the full dress RDP-1, especially purchased direct from ZSys!

I completely agree with your review of this product -- in a two channel setup, I have nothing else which produces a comparable improvement in the balance of Meridian speakers.

Untrimmed, the Meridians' tonal balance is not to everyone's taste. The Tilt control is a great little tool for adjusting overall spectral balance for each recording, but has not sufficient precision, flexibility or finesse to properly EQ the speakers for room, personal taste in tonal quality and recording quality. The ZSys doesn't interfere with the Meridians' performance or tonal control function, but used judiciously can make the subtle adjustments that transform the sound in a way each individual listener should like.

In addition, used with anything less than the very best of transports, the Zsys is totally transparent, and helps to reduce jitter, smoothing the sound noticeably. All this for a very reasonable price, IMO.

Unforunately, it does not pass multichannel signal, so it won't help with DVD players outputting DD/DTS (Zsys makes a multichannel EQ, but the price is heart-stopping!). But on two channel SPDIF or AES/EBU signal, I've heard nothing comparable.

PS to George: Should I have started a new thread for this?

George,

What tests do you suggest using only one speaker?

Dave, I think George suggests playing your normal music in one speaker only, i.e. leave the other channel completely unconnected. You don't have to have a pair connected to test various scenarios

It is time to add my two cents to this discussion as my name and reputation has been raised in at least one of the posts.

First off, I sold the DSP6000C to Dave. It was in immaculate condition and worked perfectly. Many of you should recognize my user name: worldattorney. I have sold tons of "kit" both new and almost new on Agon, eBay, and recently on Hitch with only very satisfied buyers.

I repeat, the 6000C worked perfectly at ALL volume levels and did not have any over heating problem and this speaker was driven at 85 an 90plus relative volume levels (after room calibration and proper set-up)

Since all of my 6000's, 5500's and 5000's were gone, I gave dave my spare parts inventory with the speaker.

He informed me that when he hooked up th 6Kc that he heard crackling, he then disconnected that driver and removed another driver or something like that - the point being - Dave was performing diagnostics and repairs that were above his ability. I just have this mental image of my speaker in 5 pieces, while one or two woofers and being driven at "95" while two others are hanging off bar wires.

This entire story is very suspect. Not that Dave is not telling the truth, but that Meridian dealers and Meridian techs are telling him that you have to turn down this speaker to 75 or it will heat up and blow out? BUT, if you buy a pair of $30K 7000's all your problems with be over, but first spend the money to upgraded these very very early serialed numbered 6000's for $5,000.00+. Oh, don't worry, we'll all fly out to your house to sort everything out.

This is a bizarre story.

Bottom line I am trying to get across, Dave is having an experience that none of us - fortunate that we are- have ever been through.

Just as a test, I ran my parents brand new 5200's at 99 for thirty minutes today while we were out of the house. They played perfeclty - no distortion - no clipping - no over heating.

MY 8000's I suspect will be no different.

Dave should dump all of this gear and start fresh

If you still have the G91, I would do this.

Buy a Radio Shack Analog SPL Meter (or digital if analog not available).

Buy a Video Essentials DVD (make sure it's the latest version).

You want both these in your tool box no matter what system you end up with.

Set up the 1 Speaker as a center (or Front Left).

"Type" the D6000 to type 6. If you don't know what that means read the manual (manuals are on line). This will reset it to factory. It should be a "Left Master" (which is default).

Reset the G91 to factory. "Type it" using front panel. Read manual for details. That will set it to factory.

You may have to set it up as stereo as the minimum config.

Do not use the 518.

I assume you have a DVD player.

When configuring the G91, you have to tell the system your speaker is NOT 24/96.

Calibrate the 1 speaker using the SPL Meter. See manual for doing this or search other threads.

Sit a reasonable distance from speakers (12-14 feet is typical, 20 Feet is probably too much, depends on room).

Report the offset results back.

Once calibrated put in the DVD Essentials Disk. Play the pink noise test for the front left speaker and verify it with the Radio Shack Meter.

I think if you are running 1 speaker that will eliminate any low power issues.

System will not please your level of listening since there is only 1 speaker, so I would not listen with your ears on any tests.

You might run a frequency sweep. I forget if DVD essentials has this on their. If not you can probably download one or by a CD with it. Use the Meter to measure. This may help you determine if a driver if bad.

That should keep you busy for very little while for less than $100.00 !!!

Thanks George---I appreciate your test guidance. I will do my best and report back.

As for WorldAttorney---I verify that the DSP6000c (96/24) did not overheat nor go into protective mode (if they will, they never had a chance to). Upon the initial hook up, it simply would not play without a significant "rapping" noise in the woofers, therefore, I did not get a chance to play it to see if it did the same as my original D6000s. My novice opinion is that it will not (actually, I pray it does not as it will isolate the issue to my 2 D6000s alone which would make it easier to get my system up and running with less 'gear dumping' if it comes to that), as most of you think I have some hardware, calibration or electrical issue. As for the DSP6000c, it was either damaged somehow in shipping, or something else. I did nothing to it when first turning it on except connect the cables as a slave unit. When the "rapping" started immediately, I thought it was coming from the top left woofer only (the Meridian people confirmed it was coming from all 4 woofers---just more loudly from the top left). Since WorldAttorney had sent me an extra woofer, after calling him, I simply tried to exchange the woofers (they are simply connected by some screws and 1 small solder). In doing so, I noticed the "rapping" had moved to the bottom right more pronounced (all this communicated earlier in this thread). Now, I knew I was out of my realm of expertise and made arrangements to send the back boards to Atlanta per the Meridian people. They received the speaker today and I should have some news in 1-3 days on this one. Admittedly, I am not having good fortune purchasing Meridian speakers second hand. I'll keep you posted.

As for the original D6000s, I called today and the Chicago dealer still had the speaker 2 weeks later (the one they are trying to get back to its original condition after the upgrade and upgrade removal) in his store with no communication to me whatsoever?

I phoned the Area Sales rep and he immediately arranged for overnight shipping (without my asking) to Atlanta (the boards only for the time being). So, Atlanta will have the DSP6000c boards, and one of the D6000 boards as of tommorrow. They will check them out and see if we need to ship the whole speakers (which I will gladly do and pay for), or if they can rectify the issues with what they have. Hopefully, coming to the conclusion that my room is simply too open (which should be easy to check by putting them in a smaller room) will be a last resort after exhausting all other possibilities.

By the way---the Area Sales Rep taking charge on getting the speaker to Atlanta after the Chicago dealer left it hanging is an example of the WORLD CLASS SERVICE I have alluded to. Thanks Atlanta!

By the way,

Anyone know where to buy a Video Essentials DVD-- latest version (more evidence of my neophyte audio expertise)?
