There has been some fantastic feedback on this thread! I have learned quite alot, and it is obvious that there are some extremely bright and talented people visiting this website.
In spite of my initial problems with my D6000s, I am now a Meridianite. I will do whatever it takes to get these speakers working properly, or at least determine exactly why they will not.
One of the original D6000 speakers is on its way to Meridian in Atlanta. I took the upgrades out because I could not see spending another $5000 when the upgraded speakers had the exact same problem as the D6000s without the upgrade.
In my spekaing with Jason at Meridian Atlanta, I am confident that he will be able to determine what the issue is---it it indeed that I am overdriving them in my room set-up, or is there somehting else that can be rectified (I really hope it is the latter). Jason is also looking at the DSP6000 center issue (the woofers have a loud crackle). I do not know if the center has the same volume overheating issue because I have never been able to play it due to the woofer issue (I just purchased the center from World-Attorney through this website).
The M&K speakers I am currently using are the full s150 system with a Denon 5803 (they sound fantastic and I have never had any issue whatsoever playing them at the same volume I have tried on the Meridian gear).
So far, no one has tried to calibrate the D6000's nor even suggessted it, except on this thread.
I am using the original cables that came with the eBay and Hitchhiker purchases.

George,I am surprised that you seem to think that the last 6 paragraphs from Bernie post's is something to encourage.

It definately sounds as if there is something physically wrong with the speakers or the setup. I can play my 6K's alot louder then I used with my old M&K system. So hopefully its just a configuration issue! Best of luck with it.

D jones Who have you hired/Paid to calibrate your system? Getting M America to visit your home, appears generous; I purchased a new 808i and D7k's, and never heard from them. I would be careful to not berate them in this forum, for "not doing a proper set-up", if this was not on their work order. As Meridian have been known to read these threads, it may burn a very critical Bridge for your cause, to suggest that they have not done as they set-out to do. Clarify one thing for everyone... Did you buy anything new in/for this system? Did Meridian take back your Upgrades? And for what cost? If not -- I am surprised/Impressed that anyone would drop by the house; let alone Calibrate your system, or check levels. Particularly if they repo'ed the Upgrades. Afterall, What would be their motivation to do so. Best Bernie

a) I am 49 years old, went to a lot of rock concerts and loud clubs in the 70s and 80s, but can still hear the "no adults" ringtone at 16 000 Hz. b) The problem only affected the midrange. But according to Meridian nothing's wrong with the midrange driver. c) My speakers were 24/96 generation. d) The 7000s sound better, IMO. But that, again, depends on your musical taste. The 6000s shine - the 7000s rock... Although the DSP600ps go louder, the 7000s is more "in your face". e) You can pick up a pair of one year old DSP6000s for like $8000 now. All the other Meridian models are comparatively higher priced in the second hand market. Might have something to do with the problems described in this thread... f) There is no such ting as an "irrational problem". But in my long history of hifi-listening I've encountered several equipment eccentricities of periodical nature. Explainable and repairable, no doubt. But no cigar all the same....
Current M-related equipment: DSP7000 (2), G91A FM, Sonos ZP90/ZP80 Zone Players, F80 (kitchen,yellow).

I would like to turn to the topic of Meridian Dealer and Corporate service for equipment purchased in the secondary market.
Since I am now presenting an opinion and not asking for advice, I will list some of my personal qualifications:
Ph.D. in Org Development / Psychology J.D. (focus on employment law)--not practicing Officer for 2 major Fortune 500 companies Adjunct Faculty at 2 Major Universities Noephyte in Meridian Technology
Many of you have made comments referring to Meridian reading these threads, and about Dealer responsibilities, etc.
If anyone reading this purchased a preowned BMW or Mercedes, what service level would you expect from a dealer or their National personnel? I would expect and HAVE RECEIVED, world-class service for a world-class product.
For the record, I am getting very good service from Atlanta so far, and it is a good thing that Meridian folks read these threads. They can learn quite alot as I have from the bright people on this site (hopefully, both positive and constructive). Therefore, we should not be hesitant to provide our actual experiences and thoughts (constructively), as they should help.
Any Meridian dealer should welcome the opportunity to service or provide advice to anyone who purchases preowned equipment. First, we are future customers to them and probably current if we are in contact with them about the equipment in the first place. There are numerous reasons why people sell and buy preowned Meridian products, not the least of which is they may be upgrading.
I will state openly that my experience with 2 Meridian dealers in the Chicago area has been much less than world-class. One in particular has made me feel like I have betrayed him by purchasing preowned, and that he will only give me good service (if he knows what that is) for any product or service I buy from him. He will simply disregard the rest (such as never even mentioning calibration, which has come up as a major issue in this thread regarding my D6000s).
Preowned or new, if we own a Meridian product, we are customers (and loyal ones as proven on this site). As customers, we should expect and receive world-class service from anyone connected in any way with Meridian. This is the best approach for every party involved.
World-class Meridian should be something we all strive for, and if some constructive commentary is warranted, it should be provided.
As you read through this and other Hitchhiker threads, you can witness world-class service from most of the initiator's and responder's who give their valuable time, insight and knowledge to the rest of us at no charge---a huge thank you to each of you!

Guynextdoor,
I read the ringtone is between 17-18kHz. I can still hear it in one ear. Thanks for the MP3. I was looking for that tone last week and couldn't find it.

With respect to djones1915's above, as a retired manager of a well-respected Meridian dealer, I can agree that we would always respond cheerfully to requests for advice/information about Meridian product purchased on the secondary market, of course as staff time and our knowledge permitted, without charge, to anyone who asked, regardless of warranty status of the product. And obviously, our own customers who purchased the product, new or used, from us, would always get first rate service including where possible and necessary home visits or in-store service whether the product was still under the Meridian warranty or not. However, with respect to "world-class service" from a dealer who did not sell the product, new or used, secondary purchasers need to be aware that home or in-store physical service to or help with the product, as distinguished from advice, costs the dealer valuable staff time. Given the complexity of Meridian kit, this can be a major burden for the dealer. There may well be a charge for this kind of world-class service for product purchased on the secondary market. Dealer hourly rates for this will vary, but will rarely be inexpensive for the kind of technician it takes to work on Meridian product. With his remarkable business background, I am sure djones1915 understands this, I just want to make sure all readers are aware of the constraints that may apply. PS -- This is my first ever post, so please excuse any laches in BBS etiquette!

Two Cents:
I have been in the Air-Conditioning/ Heating Business for fifty years, and I recall with displeasure a circumstance where we dispensed "How-To" advice to a caller who purported to be simply replacing a solinoid.
A day later he blew his gas Water heater through the ceiling, the second floor, The roof, and into the neighbors yard. His home was consumed with flames and the neighborhood cought fire. He was killed instantly.
Regardless of pedigree, You may want to pay experts to fix your issue, so you do not burn down the neighbors house.
Further, You may not be owed any service whatsoever by a Dealer, or M America; having bought nothing from them directly. We've all received a lot of free advice and service from this forum, and (IMO) "a little knowledge can be dangerous".
I find the 'Expository Prose' on "world class service"... grasping at straws for justification to fix gear for free. With the Proclaimed Pedigree a bit self-serving.
In light of late replies -- It appears that free advice and service from This Forum, Dealers, and Meridian America, may lead to a liability.
With no obligation to either; I suggest that this forum be closed as it appears to be waning toward the dour end of nit-picking.
Best to all who've helped out
Bernie

Keep in mind that DJones DID buy some equipment from the dealer. He bought the upgrades and he bought a G91a (not sure if this was new, demo or used but that really does not matter, the 24/96 upgrade was "new").
A lot of us have seen great service from Meridian (even on 2nd hand goods even though they technically didn't have to) and there is no exception here. He must have a pretty well connected dealer.
I think a few of us are puzzled by the results. And I don't think anyone is 100% denying the Meridian dealer/reps conclusion, just very puzzled based on their own experience.
The data supplied here is also pretty inconclusive as to what the problem may be and if it matches Meridian dealer/reps conclusion. This is in no way meant to offend DJones (nor the comments of being deaf). I play music louder than I should which is why I liked Blantent Liar`s post. I think many of us have come up gradually to the Meridian equipment level and DJones tried to do it over night, with used equipment which is all the harder (you need even more experience with used equipment, to know it`s functioning properly, no take home demos etc.).
It sounds like Meridian will end up checking his speaker inside out so we'll have to wait and see.
As far as shutting down the forum, over this, I don't think so. But you raise a good point on liability. At least the thread has remained civil.

Thanks George I agree that we all should expect great service from a great Brand, however perhaps DJones' parallel to Mercedes and BMW, being obliged to provide (him) with exceptional service, is way off mark. If a customer installed their own Air Handler, which they bought used, and then asked my company to make their botched Furnace install operate -- We'd likely tell them them no. If they phoned the Manufacturer, I trust my Lennox Rep would tell them nicely that they were out of luck. But for a steep cost, they would be on their own. And Really -- This consumer neither bought a new, nor a used car from the BMW dealer. Rather it appears he may have bought a load of broken gear on eBay, and wrote a monologue on this forum directed to Meridian America -- seeking their help and understanding. While anything he did buy through legit channels appears to work fine. So... Is the Mercedes Dealer obliged to pay a housecall to replace the transmission to a fellow who bought a third-hand Car on eBay? Is the Local HVAC guy obligated to fix your Furnace, because you get in over your head as a DIY? I wouldn't dream of desoldering my Woofers and playing them out of series; simply because I have a Juris Doctorate. If I were Meridian, reading DJones' expose demanding Excellent service, as though he paid Retail; I would tell him to take a hike. Moreover with a pedigree like his -- I would be ashamed to demand exceptional service for my own foibles in e-commerce. Caveat Emptor! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caveat_emptor/ This manner of lofty positing is precisely why I think this thread has outlived it's usefullness. Regards Bernie

Bernie, I find your post confusing. Has Djones said anywhere that he expect all service for free? He is having a problem.. And try to find a solution. I have worked for a McIntosh distributor and we would never ever punish a second hand buyer. Just charged normal cost for service. To me this problem is not fully described yet. All registers are concerned in both speakers? Have the SPL really been measured? Tone control set to flat? No problems to run them long time at say 75? Just have one signal source? Good luck Harry
