I have 3 DSP6000's (96/24) that I can't play at 85-90 volume? After 15-20 minutes, the sound becomes very distorted?
PLEASE HELP -- I've spent over $20,000 on these and a G91A.

Boy I was about to buy a pair to replace my 5200 rears.I have played my 8Ks at 90db longer then 30min no sign of running of steam at all and they sound much better at higher dbs then let say 65dbs.I think Mr Meridian one time mentioned the same when got his 8Ks. I guess you have to go to an ear doctor for checkup. Just kidding.

So it sounds like this is a reality with DSP6000's? They are useless to me if I can't play at 85-90?

I think the 5200's as rears are better that 6000's anyway.

Give us more information.
Curious though, why are you running at 90db, that is extremely loud (although perfectly legit). I have played 5500's at 90db on occasion and they seem fine.
What size is your room? Have you calibrated the system? If you have calibrated what offsets did you end up with? What kinda of cables are you running? How is the air flow around the speakers, are they possibly overheating? You might try blowing a fan at the back (just to see if it is an over heating problem). Also double check cooling around he preamp. What software (CD, DVD-A, DVD-DD) are you using? Are they all pooping out (distorting), if they were indeed I doubt they would all the same time and that says something is wrong at the source. Try rotating one speaker out at a time in case one is possibly defective.
6000DSP are awesome speakers, I think you have something setup wrong.

yeah, share some more context. are you in a very large, acoustically-treated room?
i have 6000s LR and can't imagine sustained playback at 85 (never mind 90) without serious pain and ear injury.
exactly what sort of setup work have you done with the system and speakers? how are the speakers typed/configured?
doody.

My wife thinks 85-90 is way too loud---I indeed may be suffering some hearing loss because 85-90 is loud to me, but I love it.
My room is about 25 feet by 20 feet with a vaulted ceiling 22 feet high. I have not done any calibration or even proper speaker placement because I have not been able to get them working without overheating and cracking after 15-30 minutes.
They do play fine at 75 or lower without a problem?
I have played them through their original 518 processor and 500CD (48/16). And then through a G91a after upgrading them to 96/24---and still the same issue where they will not play at 85 or higher without overheating and cracking badly.
Could I have a power problem?

I think the speakers are going into digital clipping , AFAIK a level of 87 is unity gain on DSP speakers and anything else is amplifying the digital input. I might be wrong tho.

As an aside to this , the tweeters on my DSP5500's kept on blowing at high volumes and the solution to this was to change them to the SEAS excell milennium tweeters which vastly improved the sonics as well as stopping this. One of the other problems was the the plastic flange on the OEM tweeters that vibrated or buzzed at high volumes and tightening the holding screws didnt help. This exhibitied as a form of nasty distortion during peaks. The Excell tweeters have the same electrical characterisitics as the OEM ones which are a SEAS model and are far more robust , with a 6mm thick metal flange. They are fabric domes which also tends to tame the "spittiness" of the metal domed OEM tweeters. The installation is a drop in , however you need to modify the flanges on the millenium tweeters but taking off 5mm on the outside so they fit the existing rebate (any 1/2 decent machine shop can do this on a lathe) The mod is totally reversible too and one can just reinstall the old tweeters on re-sale.

Hi DJONES1915,
Very strange poll questions, could be why you have not had too many responses. I had DSP6000's a few years ago and sold them because my room was too small, but in the time i had them, even at very high volume i had no distortion or overheating problems. I think a bit of callibration is called for.
Regards, Ian
