I have to agree with Rodney_gold as I have done the same and replaced the originals tweeters with the Seas excel Millenium with amazing result. The specs are very similar so this give us an option that most other speakers owner do not have.
My tweeters had overheated from loud session and the resistance had lowered to 2 ohms which made the amplifiers overheat much quicker(which may be your problem).
Give them a try.

Before you do anything more, calibrate them.
Because 85-90 means absolutely nothing without calibrating them, we don't know if you are really in the 75 range or 105 range until you calibrate and get on the same scale the rest of us are on.
Depending on how that goes it may give some hints to the problem.

My guess is DJONES1915 is over driving the 6000's. Having the system setup in a large room like his means he must have the config settings cranked up to a higher level than most to hit the 75db cal level in calibration. So with the extra gain in the calibration level and then cranking it up to 85 in the volume setting you end up with more gain at 85 than most setups in smaller rooms. A large room tends to need a higher volume setting to get to the same SPL as a small room because the larger room doesn't influence the volume as much. Just need to move more air to fill the room. With only 3db more gain he would need double the output power.

as george points out - ya gotta do the basic setup. this is largely mental masturbation otherwise.
your room sounds very similar to mine - ~20' wide, ~30' long, two stories high - and music over 75 is extreme.
something's awry.
doody.

I like the SEAS tweeter idea. Thanks so far to everyone. A Meridian rep and technician are coming to my home Monday. These speakers get too hot (I can't keep my hand on the middle back of them when they overheat and I have to turn them off). By the way, I just picked these up from the dealer on Friday last week completely upgraded from 48/16 to 96/24 for $4,970 with new tweeters!

I don't understand how calibration, speaker placement, or basic set-up has anything to do with speakers overheating after 20-30 minutes at 75-85 volume? The speakers are in the middle of my room with nothing around them. I have not bothered to place them in stead of my current M&K surround system because I can't get them to work.

It'll be interesting to see what the tech finds on Monday. It is definitely not expected that your gear should get too hot at that volume for sustained periods.
IMO, listening at ~80-85 really is pretty loud though. I do it from time-to-time but I really can't do it for long as my ears really do buzz after a while. It the classic case of not hearing the loudness..more feeling it.
Do post back what you find with the techo.
Rgds, Nick

I dont understand how calibration, or settings, or typing has anything to do with them overheating EVERY time within 20-30 minutes at even lower volumes now (77-85)? I have the speakers in the middle of the room with nothing around them. I have a Meridian rep and tech coming in tommorrow morning. I just picked these 2 DSP6000 mains on Friday after upgrading both to 96/24. They were doing the same thing at 48/16 as they now are with 96/24?

i don't think calibration has anything to do with overheating - something is awry.
calibration has to do with whether "85" is really "85". for all you know you're driving them at "100" ("but these go to eleven!"). without calibration the reading is specious.
doody.

You're right about calibration, but we have no idea how hard your driving them unless you calibrate and tell us the offsets. The offsets will give us an idea of how hard your room is to drive. And a calibrated level will tell if your asking too much from the speaker. You also may be cranking things louder to compensate for a poorly calibrated setup. Maybe your center is low and your cranking hard to get the vocals up, but over driving the mains.

Hi DJones,
What equipment (amps, speakers, sources) have you been using prior to the 6000s/G91 (I see you mentioned M&K) and what volume setting do you use to achieve the sound levels which you enjoy?
Cheers
George

Thanks George--I have been using a Denon 5803 and Denon 2900 DVD with a full set of M&K speakers with sub. Never had an issue with sound levels or overheating at all. I got the original D6000's with a 518 processor and 500cD from eBay for $3800 and immediately had the overheating issue. I upgraded them because the local Meridian dealer said that nothing else could be wrong if I did. But, as soon as I brought the upgraded speakers home, they did the same exacxt thing as they did before.
