What does the "DOES NOT have blue text" remark mean?

Welcome to the forum. That MSR was just an earlier version. The later ones had additional commands (dual function buttons) for the some of the infrequently used DVD player commands. These were printed in blue text on the remote. To be honest, you'd be very unlikely to find that an early MSR couldn't do everything you needed. The "blue" commands were for all those obscure anticipated DVD features, eg change camera angle. Yeah, right...

Do the old and new MSR have the same model number? Also, is a software (or hardware)update available to convert the older MSR to the newer version?

No, they aren't the same model #, and you can't convert an MSR to an MSR+.

John makes a valid point that you can't turn an MSR into an MSR+ as they are completely separate animals, but within the MSR models, the serial numbers reached 4xx (from 1xx) and possibly 5xx. "blue" functions started to appear on the 2xx serial models, but changed slightly on the 3xx models. Even if Meridian supplied a new EPROM, you'd be missing the relevant legends on the face of the remote, so no advantage to be had. If you want a more up to date version, you'd be best to sell your early model and buy a newer model. They come up on eBay reasonably often.

Bear with me. The MSR and MSR+ are completely different units are they not? I thought the "Blue Text" reference was to two different versions of the MSR.
