Seeing as the Squeezebox is pretty cheap I'll give it a go. If nothing else I could make use of the radio and it might even give me the opportunity to archive a few CDs.

Now all I have to do is find yet another plug outlet

Yes the Squeezebox can be used for radio as well, which is another feather in it's cap. I have 5 squeezeboxes around the house serving lossless music and one is used for radio - there are some really good stations out there (RadioIO) in particular which streams good music all day without advertising or inane studio chatter.

So Mark,

Can I check I've got this right? I've followed your instructions but when I extract the tracks in EAC, presumably I am extracting to 'MP3' which will in turn use the FLAC encoder we just configured?

If so, when my FLAC's are created, I get an XP error in explorer of 'Access is denied' if I try to launch them.

How do I play these back on the PC, or are they only suitable for streaming as above?

Cheers,
Pete

EAC, when set up as I noted, should extract direct to FLAC - no MP3 involved.

You'll need suitable software to play the FLAC files. On my PC I use JRiver's Media Center which has a FLAC decoder plugin.

I actually use the FLAC encoder with JRiver for quick ripping to disk.

I'm not that worried about the quality of copy, if there's an error I can go back and recopy with EAC.

So far, across about 25 discs there hasn't been an error.

Sorry to bring this to the fore again, but I just need to make sure I have this right before I start ripping.

I have followed the instructions to the letter and I can create .FLAC files by clicking on the 'MP3' icon in EAC. Is this what I should be doing?

I think it is right as clicking MP3 creates a .FLAC which is calling the .FLAC engine configured earlier in the Wiki, but the instructions don't specifically say which button to click to rip to .FLAC.

yes...if you have told EAC to use external compression and that it is FLAC.exe etc. You press the MP3 button and it rips to .WAV and calls the FLAC program straight after which converts the WAV to FLAC.

You can also rip a FLAC and MP3 at the same time.

Thanks Nick, that's what I'd thought. It was just the missing link.

How do you rip a FLAC and MP3 at the same time?

use "mareo". Haven't done it yet myself but if you check the slim forum and search on it, you'll find what you need.
