So what type of power supply does the 861 have? Linear or switcher?

I don't know either, but have no planes to open it to find out. I suspect it has a linear based on your discovery in the 568.

The 568 will have a smaller supply for sure. However I would think since the 861 was designed in the 90's before the 568 that it too has a linear power supply. I just don't know for sure...I don't have a 861.

The 568 doesn't have an IEC filter either. Just a transformer with multiple taps and separate regulation on every board. The way most highend products should be. Heck in my old Wadia DAC the transformer was in its own metal case inside the chassis. Great pains were taken to separate AC power from the electronics. As I said earlier since I separated my 598 AC power from my 568 AC power the sound quality jumped up quite a bit. A lot smoother with more image depth. Like I'm in a larger room! I'm pissed at myself for never separating them earlier.

I think the resale values of 568's should go up with Ron's discovery :-)

The 861 has a univeral (100-240) convertor, so I'd assume it is switch-mode. The "card" is also very thing, so doubtful to be a linear supply.

Passive analog speakers as well.
And Steven, you are correct, the cage instructions are in your PM. Problem is I read that over nearly six weeks ago, and forgot about it entirely. Wish Anthony was aware of it when I called him. Looked to me like the threads that accomodate the risers would have come off the cage, which is why I didn't try to remove it.
I'll see if I can run MRC in the next week.

rblnr No problem. I am not affiliated with Anthony in any way - just a customer. I hadnt discussed with Anthony the need to remove the metal power supply cage, because I had figured it out on my own. So I dont think that Anthony knew about it. All of my discussions with Anthony were centered around whether I was going to blow up my beloved G68 by installing his modded power supply. He assured me repeatedly that it was an exact match & he was correct. But in my PM to you, I related exactly how I got around not using the metal cage. Also did you remove the IEC/switch/filter combo? If not just do it, dont even think about it. If you follow my directions above it really is a pretty simple install. Again only tricky part is to fashion up a new rear plate. Total cost is like $80(new rear plate & new IEC/Switch from Anthony). If you dont like the results, simply take the new parts out & replace with factory parts. I will bet that Anthony would give you a refund on his IEC/switch. Here is a link to Anthony's IEC/switch & proper connectors combo. Just look down about mid page: http://www.mauimods.com/TacTAudio.htm Thanks
