(Loud when reading the disc, then easing off to nothing after two or three tracks) It went back to the shop, they replaced the transport and the noise was gone. Twelve months later the same thing happened again - the whine, not the replacement of the transport. By this time the local importer (I'm in Australia) had been advised by Meridian that they know the transport is noisy on certain discs (I don't know if it's a balance issue with discs not quite centered or what) but as the transport otherwise sounds fine then they weren't going to do anything about it. I sit about 3.5 metres from the player and it's loud enough to be heard over quiet patches in the music on the discs that are a problem. I believe that if I burnt a copy of the disc then I may get around the problem. This is not satisfactory to me on what is not a cheap player.

Craig,
i had transport noise problem on my 588.
it was more like disc vibaration inside.
i felt that it was like disk wasn't clamped good enough.
i hear this sometimes in computer CD-ROMs.
i just made a thin mat from plastic (transparent slides for printer work OK) and put it on top of the discs.
this is eliminated problem completely.
before i sold 588 i replaced the transport with a new one - which obviously solved the problem.
so you can try such a mat or try one of those audiophile mats.
the only thing is that when i started to use the mat for the "noisy" disks i've got an impressions that clamping became ever weaker and thus more discs required the mat - but i'm not sure whether this feeling is a correct one.
