Kal,
Your comments have made me consider this topic.
In all my life (in the UK) I have never known personally damage caused by lightning. I have known the voltage to drop by a considerable amount and to cause the frequent failure of light bulbs as the voltage fluctuated but no other damage. I do tend to unplug equipment particularly computers if needed.

Same here. I have an apartment in the city where the voltage is stable (aside from the 2 major regional blackouts) and a 19th century house in the country where the voltage varies daily and brownouts/blackouts are common. In neither place, nor in any prior domocile, have I ever had any equipment damaged by AC voltage fluctuations. I guess buying a pricey plasma started me thinking about this and I have acted based on the emotional need to feel secure and some rational analysis of what equipment would actually do something.
Not everyone will reach the same conclusions.
