On recently home auditioning a pair of DSP3100's I used a borrowed G91. Unfortunately, a characteristic of the G91 often spoilt the party.
Regularly, even at high volume levels, the G91 would emit a momentary and loud squeak/squeal. From my perspective, it was as though the disc was slipping in the ROM drive - but there wasn't any disruption to the sound, presumably because of the buffering process. It was running version 2.11 firmware.
A call to Ed at Meridian enquired if this was a common feature of the G91. He assured me it wasn't and that the G91 I had might be faulty. I wouldn't want to buy such a relatively expensive device if it was prone to such distracting tendencies.
However, on returning the G91 to the dealer and reporting on my conversation with the mothership, the response was along the lines of 'well, they would say that'. It transpires that this is a common characteristic of any DVD-ROM-based spinner that Meridian produce.
I'm also told that the 800 spinner emits an altogther different sounding 'glitch'. The problem apparently lies with different thicknesses of discs, and not being uniformly flat.
Is this true? Have other Meridian owners experienced similar noises from their DVD-ROM-based equipment?
